Oops! I almost forgot the beautiful example of the power of a 40 day fast by a nation of unrighteous people. The wickedness of the city rose up before God just as in the days of Babel, Lot and Sodom and Gomorrah (Jonah 1: 2). Jonah was sent to warn the city about impending destruction. After trying to run away from God (!!!??) he finally got around to it. The message simply said Nineveh will be destroyed in 40 days! The unrighteous king believed God and he arose from his throne and decreed a national fast with sackcloth and ashes (fasting garments) from the greatest to the least (Jonah 3: 4 – 7). Nothing in the city ate for 40 days, not even the animals. This was a matter of life and death. Do you have a situation like that in your life? What would be your response if you did? Look at their behavior – they cried mightily, turned away from their evil ways and violence (Jonah 3: 8). When God saw their works, He changed His plan to destroy them (Jonah 3: 10). This is the power of a national fast. What would be the result if leaders of nations would declare a fast – mourning and crying out to the Lord for deliverance? Do we have evil ways and violence in our lands? Yes we do. The problem is that some people have so rationalized sins as good that they would not see the error of their ways. That is not the business of the servants of the Lord. Our business is to warn. That eliminates us from the responsibility of the blood of those to whom we are sent (Eze 3, 33). Blessings
