Greetings to the Father, Son, Spirit, angels and saints in Christ. We examined Abraham as a man who set the pattern of knowing god to his household by his own personal walk with the Lord. He certainly did not keep this a secret, but his household, including his servants, learnt to worship and pray as we learnt from Genesis 24. Let us now use Deut 11: 18 – 25 as our stragegic plan for infusing the kingdom into our children. God set before israel the charge of walking in His ways when He told them by Moses to, “Take heed to yourselves, that your heart be not deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; And then the LORD’S wrath be kindled against you, and he shut up the heaven, that there be no rain, and that the land yield not her fruit; and lest ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD giveth you.” God wants our children to serve Him and to inherit the blessings of doing so. The responsibility starts again with the parents. It is incumbent on them to know the word, hide it in their hearts and set it in a prominent place in their consciousness as revealed in Deut 11: 18, when He told israel to “lay up these my words in your heart and in your soul, and bind them for a sign upon your hand, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes.”

THE PARENTS HAVE A MINISTRY OF TEACHING THE WORD TO THE CHILD BY SPEAKING IT

This responsibility is found in Deut 11: 19 – 20 in the words, “And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt write them upon the door posts of thine house, and upon thy gates”. The three strategies are speaking by four, highlighting the importance of speaking the word. This must be a continuous activity from which there is no retirement. The parent must speak the word at every opportunity, “when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up”. Get it into the child’s spirit by repititon. I would encourage you to use creativity and the available technology today – cassetes with the word, DVDs, songs, bible story books etc. whatever you do, they must learn it and hear about the great things that God has done for you, lest you teach it without revelation. The word should be applied to situation the child is facing at school etc. Since it is spirit and life, God will stand by His word and assist the growing child to become an overcomer. The child should not learn the scriptures by rote only, but should be able to explain what it means and how it relates to the circumstances of his or her life. Let the Lord teach the word to the child by revelation in the way that He teaches it to you. Don’t be afraid. These children are exposed to all kinds of evil in the school curriculum, in the society and need the word as insurance protection as we learnt in Deut 11: 18-19, so that they will keep the ways of the Lord.

TEACH THE WORD TO THE CHILD BY WRITING IT

The word could be placed in the bathroom, on posters and other places in the home where the child can access it readily. Don’t we place posters with the alphabeth and other things they should know in prominent places in the home. The word will convict and keep them living right. It is no wonder that people do not want the 10 commandments hanging in the public places!

TEACH THE WORD BY KEEPING THE WORD/LIVE THE WORD

This is, I suspect, the area of greatest difficulty. Our children see us playing church, but they do not see the reality and power of God in our daily lives. How can we convice them that this is real? We become hypocrites, jumping and shouting in the churching building, but yelling and pouting when things go wrong. If Abraham taught his family to worship and fear God, why can’t we follow through? Keeping the way of the Lord was mentioned once in the text (14.2%) as a means of teaching our children the way of the Lord. It therefore seems to be last, but is in no way the least important strategy. Look at the outcomes of keeping the way of the Lord in Deut 11: 23 – 25. God told Israel if they would keep His ways and cleave to Him, they would first experience dominion over nations (the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall possess greater nations and mightier than yourselves). Secondly, they would become possessors of real estate (Deu 11:24 Every place whereon the soles of your feet shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the uttermost sea shall your coast be). Thirdly, God would strike the fear and dread of them into the nations (Deu 11:25 There shall no man be able to stand before you: [for] the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as he hath said unto you). These sound similar to the mandate given to Adam in Gen 1: 28 to be “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.” in other words, God will restore the family to dominion in the earth as intended in the creation of man.

THERE IS A MAJOR BLESSING THAT COMES WITH KEEPING THE WAY OF THE LORD/LIVING RIGHT

God knew that people could easily speak and write things yet remain hypocrites. The scribes and pharisees were experts in hypocrisy. An examination of Deut 11 will show that one blessing results from speaking and writing the word in the family. That blessing is length of life (11: 21). In order to receive inheritance of dominion in the earth, the family needs to walk in obedience to God as we just explained in the previous paragraph.

Next time I come back, we will talk about the laying of hands on the child as seen in Jesus’ example in Mt 19: 13 and in the book of Timothy. Why not go on a journey of discovery with me and find the answer before we meet again? Blessings!
