Greetings to the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, Holy Angels and saints in Christ. I would like to continue today’s discussion by talking about Paul’s instructions to Timothy on the spirit in which women should receive instructions on the issue of dress as related in 1 Tim 2: 11- 15 in which Paul told Timothy:

“Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.”

PAUL’S STATEMENT REFERS TO THE SPIRIT IN WHICH WOMEN SHOULD RECEIVE INSTRUCTION

1 Tim 2: 11 – 14 is a continuation of the previous teaching on the issue of women’s dress and not an isolated statement about women’s place in the church. Paul, I believe, is simply continuing to tell Timothy about the manner in which the women in the church should receive the instruction on dress and on any other teaching. He had previously begun the vein of this in 1 Tim 2: 8-9a, when he said, “I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.”

When Paul said that the women should receive this instruction on dress “in silence with all subjection”, he is speaking about the spirit in which they should receive spiritual revelation. He had previously implored the women not to be angry and doubtful on the issue. Peter called this “a meek and quiet spirit” (1 Peter 3: 4b). The context in which Peter spoke is similar to Paul’s, since he too was speaking about the need for women to focus their adornment from inside out. The subject matter of the conversation related to women winning their unsaved spouses by their conduct and not by preaching sermons to them (1 Pet 3: 1-2).

IS PAUL TRYING TO DENY WOMEN THEIR RIGHTS TO DECIDE WHAT THEY WANT TO WEAR?

This is where Eve comes in and we will speak about this next time.
