I must confess that my love and admiration for Titus grew after I wrote yesterday’s post. I really did not know that there was so much about him. I feel compelled to say that he left a trail for ministers to follow and shows ideally the kind of person that leaders should have in their team. He left a great example of deep love for God, Bishop Paul, the brethren and the work of the Lord. He lived a life of self sacrifice, was trustworthy and obedient in following Paul’s godly example. In speaking about him to the Corinthians, Paul revealed his affection for his spiritual son and his confidence in him. As Titus’ heart was revealed, I can clearly understand the reason why Paul appointed him as bishop to the churches of Crete. I will now briefly explore the content of the letters that Paul wrote to him in his role of bishop.
Paul’s letter to Titus, like that to Timothy, shows us the care that he held for the ministers under his aegis. The contents of the book also reveal Paul as a fearless, visionary leader who was able to successfully delegate assignments to his juniors, assist them to identify and deal with issues affecting the Churches well as strategies for dealing with these issues. I believe that his example serves as a mentoring guide for modern church leaders. First, Paul exhorted Titus to “…set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee” (Titus 1: 5). Titus’ accountability to the task and to Paul were gently and clearly stated, but Paul also supported him by providing the guidelines for accomplishing the task.

Paul instructed Titus about the desirable prerequisites in individuals to be appointed as elders, his instructions being quite similar to those given to Timothy. Here is the link to that discussion:

* a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate (Titus 1: 8).

* Knowledge of and adherence to sound and uncorrupt doctrine is a critical prerequisite for the role of elder so that he or she “… may be able by sound doctrine both … exhort and … convince the gainsayers” (Titus 1:9; 2: 7).

* The elders should be an example of good works in all things so that no one could speak evil of them (Titus 2: 7, 8).
