The issue of “a form of godliness” was spoken in Paul’s letter to Timothy in 2 Tim 3 as the Bishop spoke about evil men and seducers who teach false doctrines. As I read the passage, it seems that Paul was continuing his discourse in 1 Tim 2: 23-26 in which he spoke about false teachers who opposed the truth:

2 Tim 2: 23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes.

2Ti 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

2Ti 2:25 In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;

2Ti 2:26 And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

I strongly believe that Paul was speaking about men who had once been a part of the church because he described them in 2 Tim 3: 8 as “reprobate concerning the faith”. When I compare scripture with scripture, he had also warned Titus about these reprobates. They were identified as the “unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision” (Titus 1: 10-16). Their motives were mercenary and they used the prophetic ministry and their false teachings to turn people away from sound doctrine. These men were abominable, disobedient and had turned away from “every good work” (Titus 1: 16).

How did these men turn away from the faith, and how did they arrive at this point of being taken captive by the devil? Well, Paul compared them to Jannes and Jambres. Here is what Blueletterbible.org said about Jannes and Jambres:
“Jannes and Jambres, were two Egyptian magicians who in the presence of Pharaoh imitated the miracles of Aaron in order to destroy his influence with the king. The author of the epistle derived their names from the tradition of the Talmudists and the Rabbins”.

Get the point? They wanted to oppose the true power of God by mimicking Moses’ miracles in order to demonstrate their own superiority. Are there people in the church like that? Yes. The issue is the WITHSTANDING of the anointed servant of the Lord. I have seen this spirit at work in the body of Christ. It wants power, fame and control.

People overcome by this spirit become can also become sexual predators of women and children. Paul said that they “creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts” (2 Tim 3: 6). This scripture meant nothing to me until I was reminded about Jesus’ words:

Luke 20: 45 Then in the audience of all the people he said unto his disciples,

Luke 20:46 Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

Luke 20:47 Which devour widows’ houses, and for a shew make long prayers: the same shall receive greater damnation.

See how much can be hidden behind the scenes? The cover up of the sin becomes an elaborate production hidden in long robes and prayers, public attention and recognition (such a nice person). I know one man of God who lost his ministry because of this kind of cover up, although I did not know about his deception until years later. Prior to all the exposure, the Lord had me write him warning letters then pay a visit in which he listened politely but refused to hear. This is why Jesus said that they shall receive greater damnation.

I honestly don’t know why the Lord has me writing in this vein. I believe that the truth will make some one free. In the upcoming post, I will warn us about the importance of not producing hypocrisy in others. May God bless you richly. Mail me please at colbenz@gmail.com.
