As I meditated on this subject this week, the Lord uncovered to me a wealth of information that was quite a surprise to me. I will deal with the following issues as I write:

  • who Jesus preached to in prison
  • a background on the flood of Noah’s day
  • the reason why He preached to those who had died in the   days of the flood
  • applications that we can take from Jesus’ actions

Who did Jesus preach to in prison?

The answer to this question is found in 1 Peter 3: 18 through to 4:

For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit,

through whom also he went and preached to the spirits in prison

who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water (1 Pet 3: 18-20)

Apostle Peter clearly tells us that Jesus preached to the spirits of those who had perished in the  days of the flood in which only Noah and his immediate family were saved. We know already from Jesus’ report in Luke 16 that the unrighteous dead are conscious in hell. They can feel, hear, speak and recognize people who they had not even known while they were alive.

Even though Jesus’ body had died, His spirit was alive and He  descended into hell, which is located in the lower parts of the earth (Eph 4: 9, 10).

Jesus  preached to those who died in the days of the flood and NOT

  • the spirits from Sodom and Gomorrah. We know that they will face the final judgement, since Jesus told the Jews of His day that it will be more tolerable for this group than for those who failed to repent at the disciples’ preaching (Mt 10: 15)
  • the disobedient Jews who had died in the wilderness. In fact, the Jews had been so rebellious throughout their history that  God told Prophet Ezekiel that He would destroy them and that they would not be saved even if Noah, Daniel and Job lived among them (Ezekiel 14: 13-16).
  • the heathen who were killed by the armies of Israel as they possessed the land of Canaan.
  • any other group of dead spirits in hell.

Blessings! Please hurry on to the upcoming post for more. Have   a great day.
