MAN IS SPIRIT/A SPIRITUAL BEING

This is one of the first teachings in scripture and important for us to understand because this will lead us to the regeneration of the human spirit. Each human is dual, comprised of BODY and SPIRIT.  When the first man was created, he had two births – that of the body followed by that of the spirit:

a. Formation of the body: “and the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground…” (Gen 2: 7)

b. then God “breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul” (Gen 2: 7).

Yatsar  (H 3335), is the Hebrew word used in Gen 2: 7 for “formed” which  is interpreted as fashioned and created.  If you follow the Hebrew usage, you will find that Yatsar is the same word used for the work of potters in 1 Chronicles 4: 23, Psalm 2: 9, Isaiah 30: 14 and Isa 41: 25 etc. A potter is a person who made earthen vessels  from clay. Ancient potters shaped their vessels of clay either by hand or by using a potter’s wheel. Vessels were used for storage (http://refbible.com/p/potter.htm). The purpose of the body is storage of the spirit.

Can you imagine how God shaped and fashioned Adam’s parts? Think of the complexity of the human body and how much thought went into his formation! This is the reason why God can rightly  call Himself  the Creator, often using the imagery of the potter to do so:

Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! (Yatsar)[Let] the potsherd [strive] with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth  (Yatsar) it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? (Isa 45: 9)

Like Prophet Jeremiah, we must  acknowledge God as our Creator and worship Him:

But now, O LORD, our father ; we [are] the clay, and thou our potter (Yatsar); and we all [are] the work  of thy hand  (Isa 64: 8)

Yatsar is also used in scripture as follows:

  • God is the Creator (Isa 64: 8; Jer 10: 16; Jer 33: 2;
  • the creation of every living thing (Gen 2: 19)
  • creation of seasons, day and night (Ps 74: 17; Isa 45: 7)
  • creation of body parts/organs especially in the womb (Ps 94: 9; Ps 139: 16; Isa 44: 2; Jer 1: 5; )
  • creation of the earth  (Ps 95: 5; Amos 4: 13;)
  • Creation of the human spirit (Zech 12: 1)
