A Star appeared in the sky as a Sign that the Messiah was born

We first heard about the star from foreigners who came from the East of Israel:

Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men 3097 from the east 395 to Jerusalem

Saying, Where is  he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star 792 in the east 395, and are come to worship him (Matthew 2: 1 & 2)

2. Who were these Wise Men?

Wise Men in scriptures referred either to “wise men” or collectively to magicians, sorcerers, astrologers, soothsayers who used satanic powers to work miracles. Heathen Kings relied on them for knowledge and satanic power.  For example:

a. Egypt
– Pharaoh had magicians and wise men, but they could not interpret his dream. God revealed the dream to Joseph (Genesis 41: 8).
– When Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh, Aaron cast down his rod which became a serpent. Undaunted, Pharaoh called for his wise men, sorcerers and magicians who reproduced the miracle. However, Aaron’s rod swallowed theirs (Exodus 7: 7-12)
– Later, the wise men and magicians were able to mimic only two of ten miracles – they also turned water to blood and brought up frogs from the rivers and ponds of Egypt (Exodus 7: 21, 22 & 8: 6, 7).

b. Babylon
Wise men was a term which collectively referred to magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans, soothsayers who advised the kings (Daniel 2: 2; 5: 7; 8). Here are examples:
1. In the 2nd year of his reign (604 BC), Nebuchadnezzar had a dream which he asked the magicians, astrologers and sorcerers to reveal and interpret (Daniel 2: 2). They could not do so and he became angry and passed a law for the destruction of the “wise men of Babylon” (Daniel 2: 14)
– Daniel was among those slated for death. He and his three friends had been classified in 605 BC as “wise men” because God had given them superior academic knowledge and skill and because Daniel understood all visions and dreams (Daniel 1: 17).
– God revealed the dream to Daniel, who then revealed and interpreted it to the King; who promoted him 2nd in command and chief of all the wise men in Babylon (Daniel 2: 48; 5: 11).
– Daniel’s source of knowledge was from God in contrast to those of his contemporaries who sought knowledge from the underworld.
– Belshazzar called for the wise men of Babylon to interpret the meaning of the writing on the wall, but they could not (Daniel 5). His wife reminded him about Daniel, to whom God had given the wisdom to interpret and reveal dreams)
Who were these Wise Men from the East?

Where did these Wise Men come from exactly? They came from the east of Israel. Is God giving approval to Wise Men?  No. He calls them workers of iniquity. The gods and wise men of Egypt and Babylon were judged and humiliated because God is the Ultimate Authority.  Only His Prophets could hear, reveal and interpret His secrets (Psalm 25: 14).  The wise men had seen the star because they had been studying the sky for omens.

God forced them to go to Jerusalem where they (and Herod) heard Micah’s prophetic word regarding the birthplace of the King of the Jews (Micah 5: 2). Micah had prophesied over 800 years prior during the reigns of Kings Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. After hearing the prophetic word, the Wise Men saw the star again and followed it to the birth place of the Messiah. God was revealing His greatness to them.

You may ask about Balaam, who had been hired by the Moabites to curse the Jews. Lured by power, fame and money, Balaam tried to carry out his mission, but was forced by God to turn the curses into blessings. As he spoke, he foretold of the  star who would shall arise out of Jacob  and destroy the  very people who had hired him to curse God’s people (Numbers 24: 17). Did this mean that God had approved him? N, God certainly did not.

Having failed to curse God’s people, Balaam later corrupted the Jews, teaching them idolatry and fornication with the heathen; to offer sacrifices to the dead and to eat foods sacrificed to idols (Psalm 106: 28; Revelation 2: 14, 15). His prophecy about the star of Jacob was fulfilled when he later died in battle against the Jews. Balaam remained the all time prophet of satan in scripture and Moses, Joshua and the New Testament prophets and Lord Jesus Himself spoke and wrote very scathingly about him (Revelation 2: 14 & 15). We know that Balaam is in hell right at this minute.
