1. Jesus reproved the Ephesians for falling from their place

In the previous post I explained that the Chief Executive Officer of the Church had said that the Ephesians had fallen from their place. He also said that He would remove their candlestick if they failed to repent and return.  I further explained that the candlestick meant the church and made comparisons with two parables of the candlestick as revealed in Moses’ tabernacle, Zechariah’s vision and the revelation of the candlestick in the Book of Revelation.

Now I am about to just relate all of the previous post about the mystery of the candlestick to the Church at Ephesus. In essence, that post was an attempt to explain the place that the candlestick or the church holds in the heavenly places or in the invisible realm.

2. The meaning of “place” in the original language

As a reminder, this is what Jesus had said to the Ephesians:

Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.

Topos (G5117) is the Greek word for place.  It refers to:

  • Geographic regions – Matthew 14: 13, 15 & 35 – heaven is above.
  • Room in a location – there was no room (topos) for Joseph and Mary in the inn – Luke 2: 7 – the body of Christ is seated at His right hand in the heavenly places
  • Place reserved for people of a certain status – Luke 14: 9 – unbelievers do not have the spiritual inheritance given to the Church
  • Place of torment to explain a place reserved for a particular group of people – Luke 16: 28 – in this scenario of Revelation 12, a place of favor has been reserved for the church of Jesus  Christ.

Jesus used the concept of  place to help us to understand and to remind us that His  church has a place or position of favor and authority reserved in the heavenly places.

The church of the Firstborn in Heaven sets the pattern for the assembly of earth. For example:

  • Moses’ tabernacle was built after the pattern of the heavenly.
  • Moses’ tabernacle was a shadow or dramatization of “things to come”
  • Jesus prayed that the will of God would be done in earth as it is done in heaven.

Therefore, we understand that the dramatization of the elders around the throne is really a revealed to us a the pattern for the earthly church to follow.

3. The church of earth needs to consciously fix its gaze on its place in the heavenly realm

It is time for the church of earth to begin to consciously and firmly  fix our vision on the Lord and on the church in the heavenly realm.   Apostle Paul revealed that:

… ye are come unto mount Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels,

To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect (Hebrews 12: 22 & 23)

The revelation of Apostle John is a confirmation of this truth that we are part of the worshipping church in heaven. Jesus is the only Star in that church. The elders were not even named. Who are they? In the presence of God, their identities became unimportant and their actions became priority.

Apostle John was deliberately given the revelation of the throne to show the elders of earth their role in the heavenly places. We have been given the responsibility to bring the church of the Lord into the presence of God:

  • Jesus is the head of the church – He walks in the middle of the candlesticks.  This points to the walk that the believer has with Him.
  • Jesus is Preeminent in all things and the elders of earth must recognize the divine authority of God. He is the “ONLY STAR AND NO ONE ELSE”
  • The elders of earth should be up front in the presence of God – they should know God’s mind  most intimately
  • The elders of earth should lead in serving God in music, singing, intercession, declaring worship, casting down their crowns as a symbol of humility and godly lives that reek of the presence of God.
  • The elders of earth should lead in evangelism – we should see the nations of the redeemed appearing after the elders worship and pray
  • As the saints entered the heavenly assembly, we see that they followed the example of worship set by the elders. It should be so on earth and this is the will of God (as Jesus prayed).
  • We see that the angels cooperate by praying and worshipping with the elders in heaven. This should be the same on the earth.
  • We see that the elders of heaven possess great authority to the point of bringing judgments into the earth. What about the elders of earth?

4. Jesus took the elders of the Ephesian church to task

The charge given by the Lord to the Church of Ephesus was delivered to the elders and not to the members (although they were affected too).   I hear the Lord saying that :

  • the  church had left its first love because his  elders had left Him.
  • the church had fallen from its place of favor because the elders had given up their job description of dwelling in His presence.

It is in the presence of the Lord that revelation,  healing, life and blessings flow through to His body – from the head down. If the church is dead and dry check the elders!

This is the message to the churches of Revelation.  Blessings!
