1. The nature of  satan’s personality struck me as  I read about the church of Pergamos

As I  read about the church of Pergamos in the early hours of  Tuesday 8th December,  I was suddenly struck  by the revelation of satan’s personality in the text.   The Lord pressed on me to write about him today.   Jesus has always been very outspoken about the nature of  satan’s personality or spirit  during His ministry on earth.  He called satan a:

  • liar
  • murderer from the beginning
  • thief whose only aim is to steal, kill and destroy
  • and exposed the nature of his kingdom and terror in the earth
  • came to destroy the works and dominion of this terrorist over the nations

2. Satan is a hater and murdererespecially of the saints

As the Lord spoke with Apostle John about the status of the church of Pergamos, He said:

I know thy works, and where thou dwellest, [even] where Satan’s seat [is]: and thou holdest fast my name, and hast not denied my faith, even in those days wherein Antipas [was] my faithful martyr, who was slain among you, even where satan dwelleth

As I read these words,   I  heard the Lord say to me – “the church of Pergamos was very resistant to torture”.

The church of Pergamos suddenly came alive in my imagination.   The Lord considered their faithfulness to be an outstanding feature, even naming Antipas as “my faithful martyr”.   Jesus’ thoughts about His church and faithful Antipas reveals that He knows His saints.

History documents the persecution of the church by the Roman Empire, but only the Lord spoke about Antipas.  He was outstanding!  Keep the faith!

3. Where does satan dwell?

Jesus told Apostle John that the church of Pergamos shared satan’s dwelling place.   Talk about living in hell!   Katoikeō, the Greek word used for “dwelleth”, means a literal place of abode. In the figurative sense,  however,  katoikeō also conveys the idea of the embodiment of the individual or the spirit that lives in him or her.

Just as the fullness of God dwelt in Christ and  produced  love and faith in the believers Eph  , so   did the fullness of satan dwell (katoikeō)  in Pergamos. The church of  Pergamos  came under severe attack and  received the full blast of  satan’s rage and hatred against God.

4. How is the dual nature of satan’s personality revealed through the church of  Pergamos?
I hear the Lord saying (as I write), that it is rather ironic that the church of Pergamos was so staunch and resistant to persecution yet fell prey to satan’s seduction. The church was unable to DISCERN the insidious  seduction of satan’s personality on the other side of the coin.

While the discernment  of  spirits was a strength of the  Ephesian church, the church of Pergamos had ironically been infiltrated by TWO  cults.

I hear the Lord say that satan beat them with one end of the stick while he waved a carrot on the other.

5.  What is the seduction of a cult?

I hear the Lord asking, “what is the seduction of a cult?” This is an age old question that still puzzles us today.   Even our foreparents Adam and Eve were deceived by satan’s guile – he was more subtil than any “beast” of the field.  We  got the bad end of satan’s  stick in the aftermath of their rebellion.

Jesus hated and was grieved by the infiltration of His church by the Balaam and Nicolaitan cults:

But I have a few things against thee, because thou hast there them that hold the doctrine of Balaam, who taught Balac to cast a stumbling block before the children of Israel, to eat things sacrificed unto idols, and to commit fornication

So hast thou also them that hold the doctrine of the Nicolaitans, which thing I hate.

Repent; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will fight against them with the sword of my mouth (Rev 2: 14 – 16)

6. The cult of Balaam is manifested in Balaam’s history,  reports of  Biblical  writers and the Lord Himself

While we do not know much about the Nicolaitanes, scriptures are replete with data about the cult of Balaam.   Balaam was called a soothsayer in scripture  (Joshua 13: 22).  He would be the modern day medium,  witch, psychic etcetera.  The words divination or diviner are also synonyms is scripture.  Soothsaying  involves:

  • satanic dreams and visions
  • satanic prophets and prophecies
  • communicating with demons (which also masquerade as the dead).

The cult of Balaam  is also manifested by:

Possibly the cult had masked itself to look and behave like the church in the time of  Pergamos.  The cult was  very appealing just as it had been to the Jews in the time of  Moses.   Its  appeal of the cult is revealed in its longevity.

However, the way of Balaam is the way of error.  God will destroy  those who chose to follow this way.

Lord Jesus referred in Revelation 2: 14  to the “doctrine of Balaam”.  This tells us that the cult had an organized system for teaching and practicing their beliefs.

Conclusion

Jesus revealed the dual nature of  satan’s  personality  in His discussion with Apostle John.  Let us beware and hold fast to the word of  truth. Blessings.
