1. GOD AGAIN REINFORCED THE COVENANT WITH ABRAHAM SHORTLY AFTER HE NAMED ISAAC.

God reappeared to Abraham shortly after making this covenant with him (Genesis 18). This was prior the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. By his obedience to the Covenant, Abraham had shown God that he had repented of his sin. He was now reestablished in good favor with God. God showed His favor by:

  • Reinforcing the promise and giving the timing about of the birth of Isaac in Sarah’s hearing.
  • Revealing the secret mission about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah (Gen 18: 17).
  • Revealing again that ALL THE NATIONS OF THE EARTH WOULD BE BLESSED IN ABRAHAM (Gen 18 :18)

God also revealed that Abraham would teach his children and household “to keep the way of the Lord and to do justice and judgment” (Genesis 18: 17 – 19).  This is God’s heartbeat. He is looking for people in the earth to obey His Word and to maintain justice and judgment in the earth.  Furthermore, the secret information about the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah was revealed as Abraham received a promotion in the Kingdom of God.

God used repetition to remind Abraham about the Covenant.  Why would He abandon this Covenant in 610 BCE?

2. GOD KEPT HIS PROMISE TO GIVE A CHILD TO ABRAHAM AND SARAH

It took 25 years of waiting, but Sarah conceived and Isaac was born at the appointed time (Genesis 17: 15 – 19; Genesis 18: 9-15; Genesis  21: 1-5). God kept His Covenant to give a child to Abraham and Sarah. He later kept His Covenant with Isaac, who was taught by his father to worship and pray. God appeared live and direct to Isaac and instructed him how to live. He kept His Covenant with Jacob and his descendants even when they forsook Him for other gods.

God has never broken His promise to be the God of Abraham’s seed. Here are some CRITICAL TRUTHS about God’s Word and therefore His Ways:

  1. God does not ever lie when He makes an oath.  In fact, the Word of  God never changes and it is IMPOSSIBLE FOR GOD TO TELL A LIE  (Psalm 138: 2; Isaiah 45: 23; Hebrews 6: 18)
  2. God places such value on His Word that He will always keep it (Isaiah 55: 10 & 11)
  3. God expects us to believe His word and becomes either offended or grieved when we do not.
  4. Any prophet who tells us that the God of Abraham has another plan of salvation is a LIAR, according to scripture.

3. ISHMAEL AND HIS MOTHER HAGAR WERE PUT OUT OF THE FAMILY HOME

God had kept His promise to Abraham and Sarah with the birth of Isaac. Abraham was 100 years and Sarah was 90 (Genesis 21: 1-5).  They celebrated when Isaac was weaned, possibly at age 2, according to Jewish customs. Sarah discovered Ishmael mocking during the celebration.  Ishmael was 14 years when Isaac was born and had been taught by his mother to despise Sarah. She therefore said to Abraham:

“cast out the son of this bondwoman and her son, for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac” (Genesis 21: 10).

Abraham was grieved, but God told him to obey Sarah because Isaac was the son of the Covenant. He did not abandon Ishmael, but reinforced the promise to make him a great nation since he was Abraham’s son (Genesis 21: 11-13). Ishmael was protected by God and was brought up in the desert of Paran, becoming an archer by profession.  Scriptures reveal that God kept His Promise to give Ishmael 12 sons and make him a great nation (Genesis 16: 6- 13; 17: 19-21; 21: 14 – 21 & 25: 12 – 18).
