1. Archangel Gabriel then gave another  prophecy regarding the Messiah

He told Daniel that this prophecy would begin at the commandment to release the captives. Although the prophecy was given during the first year of Cyrus’ reign; it seems that the command had not yet been given:

Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Know therefore and understand, [that] from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince [shall be] seven weeks, and (plus) threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the prince of the people that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof [shall be] with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined (Dan 9: 25 & 26).

2. In this prophecy, Archangel Gabriel highlighted that:

  • A command would be given for the restoration and rebuilding of Jerusalem’s streets and walls the rebuilding would take place even in troubled times.
  • Weeks or years of sevens would elapse from the command to Messiah’s birth.
  • The Messiah would be cut off threescore and two weeks after His birth.
  • An invasion, a war, and another desolation would take place after the Messiah’s cutting off – the city and the sanctuary would be destroyed again.

3.  Fulfillment of the prophecies

a. The events foretold  by Archangel Gabriel were fulfilled to the letter:

  • King Cyrus of Persia gave the command to release the Jews in 539 BC, the very year that Archangel Gabriel gave the prophecy to Daniel.
  • Therefore 539 BC  began the countdown to the Messiah and the destruction of the Temple.
  • The Messiah was cut off threescore and two weeks after His birth. This cutting off refers directly to Joseph’s escape into Egypt as commanded by God in a dream. Because of his obedience, Jesus escaped Herod’s failed assassination attempt. Herod had killed all males aged two years and under in an attempt to end the life of the King of the Jews.
  • Messiah was threescore and two = 62 weeks or 1 year and 10 months at the time that He was taken to Egypt (Matthew 2: 13 – 18).
  • The invasion, war, and desolation of the city were fulfilled with the Jewish rebellion of 66 AD and subsequent Roman destruction of the city and Temple in 70 AD.

b. The prophecy was indeed fulfilled in years of sevens

  • Four hundred and ninety years (70s x 7s) elapsed from the release of the captives in 539 BC to 49 BC.
  • 49 BC began another countdown of 49 years (7s x 7s) until the birth of the Messiah.

c. Patterns revealed in the countdown

God did the countdown in sevens in order to point the Jews to the exact identity of the Messiah and timing of His birth.

The countdown in years of 7s marked years of Releases with the BIG BANG in the 50th Year of Jubilee.  The number 7 has the following significant meanings to God:

the first seven – the Sabbath

  • Seven represents rest and release to God.
  • He created the earth then rested on the 7th day and called it holy.
  • He commanded the Jews to rest every 7th day as a sign to Him.
  • Jesus is Rest for all nations and will deliver them from their enemies (Matthew 11: 28; Hebrews 3 & 4)

the second seven –  Celebration of  the firstfruit offering

  • 7s or seven Sabbaths (49 days) counted down from the Passover to the Day of Pentecost, or the second firstfruit offering.
  • This is a multiple of 7s by 7s.
  • The first firstfruit offering was given on the day after the Passover.
  • The Jews were commanded to count 7 sabbaths or 49 days after the Passover
  • They gave a 2nd firstfruit offering on the Day of Pentecost
  • Jesus is God’s firstfruit offering and also pours out His Spirit on all flesh

King Cyrus also symbolically gave a firstfruit offering in 539 BC = the FIRST YEAR of his reign:

  • Symbolically, the release from Babylon was a Passover from slavery to freedom.
  • God commanded King Cyrus to give a type of firstfruit offering in the release the Jews as prophesied by Isaiah hundreds of years prior (Isaiah 45)
  • King Cyrus obeyed and released the Jews in the first year of his reign (2 Chronicles 36: 22 & Ezra 1: 1)
  • King Cyrus also removed the vessels for the Temple from the temple of Nebuchadnezzar’s gods and restored them to the Jews.
  • He also gave them resources towards the rebuilding of the temple.
  • This means that a second firstfruit offering would come in another 7th.
  • This 7th was the  490th year of the countdown.
  • This will take us to 49 BCE, or the 49th year of the countdown. What events took place then?
  • In 2 BCE, or the 49th year of the countdown, God gave His firstfruit offering through a virgin called Mary.
  • The 50th year (4288 or 1 CE) marked the birth of the Lord and Christ Jesus.

the third seven represents the Year of Jubilee:

  • Every 7th year, the Jews were commanded to rest the land and also celebrate a Year of Release for Hebrews who were servants.
  • God hated it when the Jews refused to comply and sent them into captivity for refusing to obey
  • The tenth day of  every 49th year was the announcement of the upcoming year of Jubilee in the 50th.
  • Jesus is the eternal rest and Jubilee for all those who believe (Isaiah 61; Luke 4: 18 – 22).

d. The countdown in years of 70s

  • God first instituted a 70 year of rest on the Land of  Judah in order to rest the land from the pollutions of sin (2 Chronicles 36: 21; Jeremiah 44).
  • The earth gets no rest when its inhabitants worship idols – there is pollution with blood, idol worship and the occult (Psalm 106: 34-39).
  • The end of every seventy year period was a commemoration of the rest of the earth in every century.
