1. Introduction

Today’s post will explore the meaning of Jesus’ warning to the church of Thyatira about “the depths of Satan”:

Notwithstanding I have a few things against thee, because thou sufferest that woman Jezebel, which calleth herself a prophetess, to teach and to seduce my servants to commit fornication, and to eat things sacrificed unto idols…

But unto you I say, and unto the rest in Thyatira, as many as have not this doctrine, and which have not known the depths of Satan, as they speak; I will put upon you none other burden (Rev 2: 20 & 24)

2. Understanding the meaning of “the depths of Satan”

 a.      “The depths of Satan” refers to the doctrine or teaching of the false Prophetess Jezebel

The subject of Jesus’ warning in Revelation 2: 20 & 24 is the false doctrine taught by the false prophetess Jezebel.  Jesus reproved the church members involved for committing fornication and eating “things sacrificed to idols”.

As I previously wrote, a comparison with Revelation 2: 14 revealed that these doctrines were key teachings of the cult of Balaam. In His role of Chief Apostle of His Church, Lord Jesus warned His servants that this cult took them to the “depths of Satan”. The warning is that any occultic activity takes an individual into an arena in which satan is revealed to the individual.

b.      The depths of satan versus the deep things of God

I explored the Greek meaning of the word “depths” in order to fully understand Jesus’ reproof to the church.  I found that bathos (G899) is the Greek word for depth in Revelation 2: 20. Bathos is used in 1 Corinthians 2: 10:

But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep (bathos) things of God (1Cor 2:10/KJV).

We will be able to understand the meaning of  “the deep (bathos) things of God” by exploring a comparison found in Apostle Paul’s discussion in 1 Corinthians 2: 10. I found that the deep (bathos) things of God”  refers to the mystery (musterion) or secrets of God:

  • The wisdom, mystery or secret things of God
  • Power of God
  • Knowledge of the invisible realm
  • Secrets of God which are hidden from unbelievers
  • Secrets known only to God (1 Cor 2: 7)
  • Secrets revealed to the human spirit by God

Apostle Paul further explained that the mysteries or deep things of God are revealed through:

  • speaking in heavenly languages (1 Cor 14: 2)
  • interpretation of heavenly tongues (1 Cor 14: 13 – 18)
  • the prophetic ministry (1 Cor 14: 24-25)

Jesus commonly spoke about the mysteries of heaven in parables, but only interpreted the meanings to those who were His close disciples:

And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries (musterion) of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given (Matt 13: 10, 11/KJV)

 .

c.       The depths of satan are the secrets things taught and revealed by satan to those who choose to believe and follow

By comparison with the “deep things of God”, we therefore understand that when Jesus spoke about “the depths of Satan”, He was referring to:

  • The worldly wisdom, mystery or secret things of satan
  • Power of  satan
  • Satanic knowledge of the invisible realm
  • Secrets revealed to humans by satan

I will now refer you to a previous post on the cult of Balaam which will give startling revelation about Jesus’ warning to the church. We must beware of secret orders, secret societies, lodges etcetera which teach the depths of satan.

Blessings. More next time
