1. God FORMED Adam
A few years ago, I made the startling discovery in scripture that Adam was a black man. The truth lies under our noses in the imagery of the Book. First of all, we need to review the truth that God formed Adam:
And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul (Genesis 2: 7).
Yatsar is the Hebrew word used for FORMED in the text. Here is the CLUE. Yatsar is used in the following ways:
- earthen vessels (2 Samuel 17: 28)
- potters (1 Chronicles 4: 23; Psalm 2: 9; Isaiah 29: 16; Jeremiah 18: 2 – 4 & 6; Jeremiah 19: 1 & 11; Zechariah 11: 13)
- formed the eye (Psalm 94: 9)
- formed the dry land (Psalm 95: 5)
- God forming body parts (Psalm 139: 16)
- potter’s clay (Isa 29: 16)
- potter’s vessel (Isa 30: 14)
- potter treading clay (Isa 41: 25)
Yatsar is also used in relation to silversmiths who “make a graven image” and fashion a piece of metal into a finished product (Isa 44: 9 & 12). Can you picture the Father shaping and fashioning man’s body parts? Even more interestingly, yatsar comes from a Hebrew verb which carries the picture of something being spread into shape (Strong’s in blueletterbible.com).
2. Clay is the “dust” from which God made Adam
Clay is “dust” combined of clay minerals such as iron, the component responsible for the color. It becomes plastic when mixed with water. Maybe this is the reason why water comprises 70 % of the human body composition (Wikipedia.com). In order to determine the Hebrew meaning and usage of dust in scripture, I explored the texts in which the Hebrew word was used. However, its usage mainly turned up the word “dust”. However, God (with His usual sense of humor), revealed in the imagery of the scriptures that he used clay to make Adam and Eve.
The scriptures further paint a picture in which God is a Potter who shaped man like clay and from clay. Prophet Isaiah must have been shown a video of the creation of man, because he repeatedly drew the imagery of Potter God molding and shaping clay into a man. Other writers in scripture also point to this truth:
Remember that you molded me like clay. Will you now turn me to dust again? (Job 10: 9)
But now, O LORD, thou [art] our father; we [are] the clay, and thou our potter (yatsar) ; and we all [are] the work of thy hand (Isaiah 64: 8).
Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! [Let] the potsherd [strive] with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth (yatsar) it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? (Isaiah 45: 9)
The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter (yatsar) !(Lamentations 4: 2)
Behold, I [am] according to thy wish in God’s stead: I also am formed out of the clay. (Job 33: 6)
3. Adam was God’s “potsherd” or earthen vessel
As Prophet Isaiah compared God to the Potter who made Adam from clay, he warned humans not to strive against God because we are just “potsherds” or earthen vessels:
Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! [Let] the potsherd [strive] with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth (yatsar) it, What makest thou? or thy work, He hath no hands? (ISaiah 45: 9)
Cheres, the Hebrew word used in the text for “potsherd” is rendered 9 out of 17 times in the following ways in scriptures:
- earthen vessel
- vessel of earth
- earthen bottle
- earthen pitchers
Since Prophet Isaiah also used the word potsherd as a synonym with clay in Isaiah 45 : 9; he reinforces the revelation that Adam and Eve were formed from clay.
4. What was the color of the clay from which Adam was formed?
Chamar is the root word for clay used in Isaiah 64: 8) and Job 33: 6). Scriptures reveal through this word that clay:
- could be daubed (Exodus 2: 3)
- was red (Psalm 75: 8)
When the members of the God Family said, “let us make man/‘adam in our image, after our likeness…” (Genesis 1: 26), they were speaking about making a reddish man who would derive color from the clay from which he was made. Amusingly, Adam means reddish or “dyed red”.
Further astonishing revelation in scripture revealed through the meaning of his name confirms that he was indeed a black man. ‘Adam is the Hebrew word used in Genesis for Adam or man. However, ‘Adam comes from the root word ‘adam (H 119) which means “red”, “dyed red” and “ruddy”. The similarities between the color of clay and the description of Adam’s color strongly confirm the revelation that Adam was a black man.
5. What was Adam’s color or race?
What color red was Adam? Was he bright red? Well, I doubt there are races of people whose color is red. If you Google “images of red clay” , an astonishing range of hues turn up. The red clay color wheel reveals a wide range of colors from red to reddish brown to to pink to brownish. Obviously Adam was not a frank red, but carried one of the colors in the color wheel as well as the genes for a variety of human skin colors.
I would safely say that brown is the dominant hue of red clay.
In fact, dictionary.com (2012) defines “red clay” as “brown to red” in color.
We can safely conclude that Adam our forefather was a black man.
6. Who is a potter and how does he or she form clay into a vessel?
A potter is someone who makes pottery or “earthen vessels”, the material referred to in scripture. We know from 2 Samuel 17: 28 that potters of the day made “earthen vessels” which were derived from clay. There is no doubt that God made man from clay since the scriptures made this direct comparison.
The Scriptures of Truth reveal the following truths about the formation of pottery from clay and therefore the formation of man:
- the potter treaded the clay with his feet (Isaiah 41: 25)
- the potter used his hands to carefully mold the clay into shape (Isaiah 45: 9; Psalm 95: 5)
- the finished product could be dashed into pieces (Psalm 2: 9). The human body can indeed be broken
Can you imagine how God carefully took time to fashion and mold Adam? I encourage you to celebrate the God who created you and to thank Him for His manifold wisdom in creating you in His own image and likeness.
Blessings! Celebrate your creation.

Adam neither white nor black, He was the color of clay “Reddish Brown”
What color was Adam?
in Frequently Asked Questions About Creationism | Short Answers to Big Questions
In western countries, nearly every imaginative painting of Adam and Eve depict two adult Caucasians with fair skin and blue eyes. These images, even used as Bible illustrations, tend to shape the reader’s mental image of the first man and woman. The Sunday-school origin of the dark races is often that they were descendants of Adam and Eve who had migrated to a hot climate where the suntan eventually became an inherited characteristic. These images and explanations discredit Christianity.
The true explanation began to be resolved in 1913 when it was shown that human beings carry two genes for color and that each gene consists of “black” or “white” alleles. One allele was received from the mother and the other from the father. The allele is part of the gene, and the gene is part of the DNA – while the DNA resides in the nucleus of every cell in our body. Our skin color is caused by the pigment melanin, and this is controlled by two pairs of genes that geneticists refer to using the letter designations Aa and Bb, where the capital letter represents dominant genes and the small letters represent recessive genes. A and B, being dominant, produce melanin in good quantity while recessive a and b produce only a minor amount of melanin. Hence, our coloration depends upon the number of black and white alleles we received from our parents. The color genes express themselves in only one place – specialized skin cells called the melanocytes – that produce granules of melanin that are delivered to neighboring cells.
Eve was made from Adam’s rib and was thus a clone of Adam [Genesis 2:21-22]. They would therefore have had identical genes for melanin production. If they were both AABB, they would have been Negroid and produced children of only the darkest of Negroid coloration. If this were the case, the world’s population today would be entirely Negro. In fact, only about 10% of the world’s population is Negro, so we can be certain that our first parents were not of the AABB combination. By the same argument, if Adam and Eve had both been aabb, all their children would have been aabb meaning that all their descendants would be the lightest Caucasoid possible – there would be no other colors. Clearly, this is not the case, so by a process of deduction we can conclude that Adam and Eve were heterozygous, each having two dominant and two recessive genes, AaBb. They would thus have been middle-brown in color and from them, in one generation, the various shades of brown would have been produced.
These color differences were likely amplified following the business at the Tower of Babel [Genesis 11:1-9] when the human gene pool was divided. Loss of genetic information in an isolated population is well known and a problem to breeders of pure-bred dogs, horses and other animals. It seems that one population group that migrated from the Tower of Babel suffered a greater loss of the genetic information required to produce the melanin and became the Caucasians. The bottom line is that Adam was not white or black but a good middle brown.

Greetings Tumbacan
I mean of the black race When I refer to “black”, and not necessarily skin color jet black.
I agree that Adam and Eve would have had to possess the genetic pool for skin color since we see we see color differences between people in the Bible, for example, the sons of Noah as well as Esau and Jacob.
The possible outcomes in their offspring would have been various shades of either the same skin color, darker skin color or a lighter color:
– AABB – black skin? e.g Ham, Cush
– ABAB
– AaAa
– AaBb – same color as Adam and Eve
– BbAa – same as Adam and Eve
– BbBb-
– abab –
– aabb –
Black people in the Bible
As a result of your query, I am now reading more on the science of skin color. Thanks a lot.
I just found this article…http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/researchers-identify-huma/
I should add that I once had a vision of Sarah, wife of Abraham. A servant was combing her hair, which was long and reached to the middle of her back. Her hair was not straight like to Caucasian’s, but was soft and mildly curly.
Sarah was not black, brown nor Caucasian, but her hair and skin were sort of golden bronze to auburn (like the hair color on lady in this picture)

Adam was from RED earth not black doesn’t take a genius to look up the original words in the Torah. Adamah from same root also means red earth not mentioned as much because was once considered common knowledge. Let me guess you don’t know Hebrew.

I don’t know why but have always believed Adam and Eve were black. Being a white male, i have never understood the difference in people because of colour or shape, i have always looked at black people or any other human as brothers.I am ashamed of our division and the better than thou attitude because of differences. But these divisions exist beyond racism and not very nice people will use anything to put themselves above others or cause them despair.

Greetings Adam and Eve were both black, ill tell you this, from black skin you can get any color in the human race, even white! But you cant get any color but white from white, because white is recessive Gene,if two blacks mate it is rare but possible to have a white child… rare but possible. Now moses was black ,Jesus and so on, Television and devinci painting has screwed up the world! The True Israelite were black slaves who were suppose to inherit the land, but because they did not obey the laws the curse began! Take a guess on who carried out our curse?… the whites, who hated so much they changed the true Jesus, and turned him into white Jesus, and then killed in the name of white Jesus! Yes we are Gods chosen just Read about Jacob and Esau!

I am a white woman. Flesh and blood will not inherit the kingdom of GOD. People are always trying to put race as a reason to be ‘chosen’. How many ‘chosen’ people disobey the LORD daily. Look at thing in the Spiritual. There is no male/female, Jew or Greek, or Gentile. That is Flesh. Those who worship GOD worship HIM in Spirit and in Truth. Makes no matter to me if Adam was rainbow coloured. It is the Spirit that gives life, the flesh counts for nothing.
Peace and blessings in King YAHSHUA!

I like the heading, Adam was a black Man in honor of God!
I do not know how true scientifically the saying, “Black is the presence of all colors; and white is the absence of all colors! Therefore, all men of various colors at present and from the beginning of time, must have originated from the black – the source of all colors!

If you look for some research on an African ethnic group call San, Khoi, Khoi-San or San-Khoi, you will notice they are earthly color brown….like “red” clay. This ethnic group which currently dwells near South Africa, is said to have one of the oldest genetic markers of all Africans/Black races…….and they are not dark skinned, yet they are black. Shalom

…oh yeah, by the way, back in school I formed a vase from clay, and glazed it with minerals that were taken from “the dust of the ground”. When it was finished, the vase was green. I don’t think a man’s skin color matters to God any more than his hair color.

I agree that skin color does not matter to God. What type of clay did He use to make man and what formula did He use to make man brown and not green? LOL

I can’t follow your argument that since Adam MAY have been the reddish-brown as clay, that he was black. I doubt my brothers who are “Native American” a.k.a. “American Indian” a.k.a. “The RED Man” would agree either. It would seem that your conclusion is that since he wasn’t white, then he must have been black. I would suppose most races have skin color somewhere between white and black. Also, I suppose that Adam (and Eve, who was created from a rib taken from Adam) was not of any race, but “multiracial”, since all races descended from them.

Dear PJ
It is OK that you cannot follow my argument. This is because we have had certain mindsets from time immemorial. I do believe that Adam and Eve must have had the genes for all races. However, what skin color does a multiracial person possess? That would be an interesting question to explore since there are so many races in the earth.
Blessings
