1. King David was a black man?
Earlier this week I was musing on the revelation of the black race in the scriptures when I remembered that I had read that David was “ruddy”. I raced excitedly to blueletterbible.org and found two texts in the Book of 1 Samuel. In the text, God had sent Prophet Samuel to Bethlehem with the intent of anointing a King to replace Saul:
And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all [thy] children? And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and, behold, he keepeth the sheep. And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him: for we will not sit down till he come hither
And he sent, and brought him in. Now he was ruddy (‘admoniy/H 132), [and] withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to. And the LORD said, Arise, anoint him: for this [is] he.
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah (1 Samuel 16: 11 -13).
2. The exciting meaning of ‘admoniy
‘Admoniy, meaning red, is an adjective which describes the complexion of the young David. Here is deep revelation:
- ‘Admoniy comes from the root word ‘adam (H 119).
- The writer therefore showed the similarity between David’s and Adam’s complexion.
- We can therefore conclude that David was a bronze man
- In contrast, people who were described as “black”, like Solomon’s wife, were much darker, possibly ebony in complexion. For example, Solomon’s wife said that she had been scorched by the sun
3. Goliath the giant disdained David because his complexion was ruddy
The second scriptural reference to David’s skin color was made in relation to his encounter with Goliath. The giant disdained him because he was ruddy (‘admoniy/H 132) and only a youth. Again the word ‘admoniy/H 132 is used to describe David’s bronze complexion:
And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was [but] a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
4. Racial issues in the scripture
As we read between the lines, scriptures reveal existing issues related to skin complexion. For example:
- Solomon’s wife asked the people of Jerusalem not to disdain her because she was black
- Goliath disdained David because he was bronze
The writers singled out these skin tones because the individuals concerned were different from their peers and relatives. Consider that the entire slave trade and racism were built on the issue of the black race being an inferior one.
How many people have gone to hell as a result – God created man black! Blessings and celebrate your black heritage!

David was not a black man. He is described as ruddy. Blacks can not be a ruddy color. Ruddy was used else where to describe white skin as is evident in Song of Solomon chapter 5 verses 9-15. Verse 10 says her beloved is white and RUDDY, chief among ten thousand. Verse 14 His body is carved IVORY inlaid with sapphires. His legs pillars of marble (which is white) . That is not talking about David but it is CLEARLY referring to a white man as ruddy which blacks can’t be. Now1 Sam.17:42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
1 Samuel 16:12 So he sent and had him brought in. He was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. Then the LORD said, “Rise and anoint him; he is the one.”
1 Samuel 17:42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was [but] a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
Song of Solomon 5:10 My beloved [is] white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand.
Lamentations 4:7 Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing [was] of sapphire:
David was not black and the bible is very clear concerning that for anyone that values the truth. Other great people in it were but David clearly was not one of them.

Hello Artemis
Do you know that there are lost tribes of Israel that live in Africa? They have been genetically tested. They are black people, live in isolated communities, never intermarried and practiced Judaism for centuries.
I encourage you to check it out – the Lemba.

1 Samuel 16:12
And he sent and brought him in. And he was ((BROWN)) with goodly eyes, and well favoured in sight. And then the LORD said up and anoint him: for this is he.
The earliest translation which is the Tyndale-Rogers-Coverdale-Cranmer Bible the first written English bible tell you he was clearly brown skin. The second which is the Coverdale bible say he is well colored.(I’m pretty sure you known what that means.) The 3rd written bible which is the KJV 1611 says he was ruddy and it so happen when you read the Zondervan bible dictionary it defines as
Ruddy- a red or ((fair complexion)) in contrast to the dark skin of the Hebrews.(1 Samuel 16:12) (1 Samuel 17:42) (Song of Solomon 5:10)
It’s quite evident that his skin color stood out more than everyone’s because he was a fairer or lighter complexion compared to them. The etymology of words were changed up bad in this modern vocabulary. It’s quite evident that some of these words don’t mean what they mean in old English that’s why it takes deep research to find this stuff. People tend to forget that brown is a mixing of yellow and ((red)) plus black. That’s why Ruddy is substituted for the word brown.(They are close related words.) And for the song of Solomon you’ll be surprised who the Shula mite is and who she represents. Don’t forget King Solomon was not the wisest man alive for nothing.(He’ll confused that hell out you, you will really have to study his songs by reading the whole bible over and over to get them.
1 kings 4:32.
And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
But anyways they all were Brown/Dark people. Hope I didn’t type to terrible for you. Wish I could have been more edifying, but I typed this in a rush.

Mosesmoe here, They all were dark in skin color, some called it red brown , black or bronze,Africans are the true descendants of the Israelites ,who were dark skin, Whites have deceived the whole world with the lies of white Jesus and so on, If Jesus is the root of King David who was a man of color, and the father of Solomon ,who was a man of color, who had a mother Bathsheba, who was a woman of color, than you get color! Sorry white people i know its a sad day for white people with the lies told by your race, and so many are in the flames for what they have did, let there be no hate with no race, eventhough truth surfaces around you

Esau too was described as “ruddy”. So why do so many think he’s a Caucasian? Ijs…Africans ie AfruIkans aka Mother Land is erroneously identified. They are Canaanites not She mites though the Lemba, Sewhi, Ethiopian and others ascribe to Hebrewism.

Sorry lady, but no luck. Ruddy means red, reddish. Not bronze! The bible in detailed description uses the word bronze many times in the Old Testement. So by no means would Gods word substitute the word bronze for ruddy. 2 different colors. I agree David must have been lighter skinned than the average hebrew and clearly his brothers.

Ham was not cursed. It was his son, Canaan that was cursed. Noah did the cursing, not God (Genesis 9:24-25). It’s puzzling to me why Ham wasn’t cursed; he was the one who did the bad deed. I guess we won’t know that until Jesus returns and tells us.

Hello Wynoma
Interesting indeed. Reading between the lines, it seems that Canaan might have been the more aggravating to Noah, possibly the ring leader. The situation must have been overbearing for a father to have said such terrible words. God bless and thanks for commenting.

Ruddy according to the definition found on Wikipedia and other online sources is a crimson red color that is also associated with reddish brown.

Sorry, but despite your creative attempt to appropriate David, David was not black. No black person is ever referred to as ruddy in the Bible. No one today refers to any black person as ruddy. Ruddy is not bronze. It is red.
Admoniy means red. There are plenty of Hebrew words for black or dark complexion, but this is not one of them. Sorry.

Why are some black people called RED BONED? Has nothing to do with mixing either. Black people come in different shades of brown from Ruddy (Red Boned), High Yellow, brown skin, mocha, to deep dark (Christ Color)
