a. Jesus’ Words Regarding the Gate to Eternal Life

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it (Mt 7: 13 & 14). 

b.  What did Jesus mean when He said that there is a “strait gate” to eternal life.

ii.  What is the strait gate?

  • Strait gate is an adjective to describe the gate to eternal life. So what is that?
  • The entrance to eternal life is a strait gate.

iii. Root word for Strait.

  • We must  explore  histēmi, the root word for strait (G2476 – histēmi) for greater clarity. Think of it as a treasure hunt.
  • Synonyms for histēmi   include – Stand, established, set, appointed.
  • Stand or stood is mainly used.

iv. Is “clearly defined” a synonym for “strait”?

Strait – Imagery of something standing out. Yes

Some Examples:

  • star stood over.
  •  they love to pray standing in the synagogues.
  • Jesus stood still – He had been walking along.

v. Summary

Strait  means that

  • the entrance to eternal life has been established by God.
  • It is clearly defined, stands and will not change.
  • Jesus is the way in, not Allah, Buddah etc.

The strait gate – the access point to eternal life stands and will not change.
