a. Jesus said that there is a Way that leads to Life

The text:

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it (Mt 7: 13 & 14).

b.  What did Jesus mean when He said: “narrow is the way which leadeth to life” in Mt 7: 14.

  • Let’s being with “the way” (G3598 – hodos) since narrow is an adjective to describe it.
  • Click on “the way” in the preceding sentence to go to the readings.
  • WAY (G3598)

i. Literal uses – related to natural things

  • route, way of the sea, way of the Gentiles, wayside, highway, journey, road.
  • WAY (G3598) of life means the Path to Eternal Life.
  • Isn’t this obvious? It is safer to explore meanings since usage can differ in the original language.

ii. Deeper meaning of  the WAY (G3598) to life.

The deeper meaning is related to Spiritual things. This meaning will be closer to the context of Mt 7: 14.   The WAY (G3598) to life is the

  • Way of the Lord/God,
  • way of righteousness
  • way of peace
  • smooth way
  • ways of lie – no death there, rejoicing.
  • Way of salvation
  • the/ this/that Way
  • His Ways
  • a more excellent Way
  • the Way into the Holiest
  • Way of truth.

iii. Contrasts

The WAY (G3598) of Life contrasts with

  • “the Wayside” where demons destroy the Word
  • rough ways
  • unstable ways
  • way of Cain
  • way of the Gentiles.

This is the foundation for other doctrines. e.g salvation, righteousness etc. FINALLY, let us contrast the Way of Life with other ways.

c. What did Jesus mean when He said that the Way to Life is “Narrow.”

i. What does “Narrow” mean?

Narrow = G2346 – thlibō. Let’s go here…http://t.co/ygBpRnam

Narrow (G2346/thlibō).

  • occurs 10 times in 10 verses.
  • Means afflicted x 3
  • troubled x 3
  • suffer tribulation x 1
  • trouble x 1.

The way of Life is narrow

It means that The Way of the Lord is the way of tribulation and trouble. I would never have imagined this was the meaning. No wonder Jesus said few find it.

This is the skeleton. We add meat for richer meaning depending on the context. Think of the man begging by the wayside – no provision.

d. Jesus used “The Way” in The Parable of the Sower
