a. Jesus said that there is a way that leads to destruction

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide [is] the gate, and broad [is] the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

Because strait [is] the gate, and narrow [is] the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it (Mt 7: 13 & 14).

i. What did Jesus mean when He said that there is a broad way that leads to destruction?

  • Broad = G2149 – eurychōros
  • Used once in the text of Mt 7: 13
  • We therefore will look up the root word – G5561 – chōra

ii. The revelation about the broad way based on the root word chōra

The broad way:

  • lies in the shadow of death – Mt 4: 16.
  • is a place of tombs and demon possession – Mt 8: 28.
  • is a place of self-mutilation. The man in the tombs cut up himself.
  • is a far country from God… a place of riotous living…lack… famine  – Prodigal Son – Luke 15: 13 & 14.

the broad way is a terrible place – but so attractive to those who are lost – eyes blinded by the god of this world.

ii. What did Jesus mean when He spoke about destruction?

Destruction in the text = Strong’s G684 – apōleia
Usage shows that the way to destruction is associated with:

  • waste
  • perdition/ruin
  • loss of money
  • death
  • damnable heresies/false religions
  • pernicious ways
  • damnation.

In the upcoming post, we will explore the meaning of pernicious ways  from 1 Pet 2 :2.
