False Teachers And Prophets Lurking On The Way To Destruction

We discovered from scripture that The Way That Leads To Destruction is filled with false prophets and teachers:

But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of

And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not (2 Peter 2: 1 – 3).

Here are SIX hallmarks:

  1. they privily bring in damnable heresies
  2. teach damnable heresies
  3. deny the Lord
  4. many will follow their pernicious ways and
  5. and will cause evil to be spoken about the truth
  6. In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money

  • Privily is (G3919 – pareisagō).
  • Used once in the King James in this text.
  • The root word is G3919 – pareisagō.
  • Example – Herod “demanded” the Wise Men to tell him the time of the star’s appearance and the place of Jesus’ birth. He really intended to kill and not worship our Lord (Mt 2: 4, 7 & 16).
  • We therefore understand that these false prophets and teachers will craftily infiltrate the church with false and destructive teachings.

Damnable (G684 – apōleiais) is the same Greek word for destruction .

The word “sect” or belief system is a synonym for heresies  (G139 – hairesis):

  • sect of the Pharisees.
  • sect of the Sadducees.
  • sect of the Nazarenes
  • The Christians were called a sect – Acts 24: 14.

The context of 2 Pet 2: 2 indicates that heresies are contrary to the truth. I once heard a famous Prophet teach on TBN that Jesus did not know who he was until the temptation. I was vexed. Jesus knew exactly who He was by age 12…Satan was playing a guessing game in the wilderness…that is why the Lord had to wait until 33.

Jesus would have been dead by 15 if He had launched His ministry at 12. He had to wait for the “fullness of time”. Satan thought he had died in Herod’s genocide.

I was in a meeting where the Prophet/Teacher said satan took Jesus’ spirit & took him to pinnacle of the temple.   I waited to the end of the meeting to  discuss it and replied that Jesus was Son of God & satan had no power over him. He was polite, but firm in his conviction. One day I heard his obituary prematurely dead at 64. Did satan take his spirit out of his body as he taught?

  • Deny – G720 – arneomai
  • Deny and swear that you do not know Him – being vigorous with it out of fear for your existence, like Peter.
  • Choose someone else in exchange for the Lord/choose another god – Acts 3: 14.
  • To deny the faith – 1 Tim 5: 8.
  • Denying the power of God –  2 Tim 3: 5.
  • Deny God in lifestyle – are abominable and disobedient – Titus 1: 16.
  • Deny that Jesus is the Christ – 1 Jn 2: 22.
  • Deny  the Son – 1 Jn 2: 23

Our study so far has revealed that these false prophets and teachers teach heresy and ALSO live contrary to God’s word, according to Titus 1: 16.  Since “Pernicious ways” is the same as the way to destruction, I decided to further explore the root. The root word for destruction or pernicious shows that pernicious ways result in:

  •  destruction
  • death
  • losing one’s life
  • losing one’s reward
  • being lost

By reading 2 Peter 2, we understand that pernicious ways encapsulate unrighteous  conduct, corruption and unlawful deeds against God. People who follow pernicious ways:

  • rebel against God, like the angels that sinned – v. 4.
  • lift up themselves in God’s place – as in the nature of satan’s sin – v. 4
  • live the pre – Flood lifestyles where there was a high degree of interaction with demons – v. 5
  • engage in unlawful behavior – homosexuality, lesbianism and bisexual behavior – v.6
  • disrespect to God – v. 10
  • are full of adultery – v. 14
  • covetous – v. 14
  • love the occult, like Balaam did  – v. 15
  • speak words of vanity – v. 18
  • love the lusts of the flesh – v. 18
