Old Testament references to the word “Eternal”

The first references to the word “Eternal” in the King James Version are found in the following Old Testament texts. As you can see, two different Hebrew words are used: 

The eternal  (Qedem/H6924) God is thy refuge, and underneath [are] the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them (Deuteronomy 33: 27)

Whereas thou hast been forsaken and hated, so that no man went through [thee], I will make thee an eternal  (`owlam/H5769excellency, a joy of many generations.

 

What does it mean when Qedem/H6924  is used for eternal?

Qedem means:

  • ancient – Deut 33: 15; 2 Kings 19: 25; Isa 19: 11; Isa 23: 7.
  • ancient time (s) – Isa 45: 21; Isa 46: 10
  • of old – Neh 12: 46; Ps 44: 1; Ps 55: 19; Ps 68: 33 and others.
  • past – Job 29: 2.
  • before – Ps 139: 5; Isa 9: 12.
  • everlasting/used in reference to God being everlasting – Hab 1: 12.

 

What does it mean when `owlam/H5769  is used for eternal?

When `owlam/H5769  is used for eternal, it means

  • for ever – Gen 3: 22 (God did not want Adam and Eve to live forever after they sinned); Gen 13: 16; Ex 3: 15; Ex 12: 14, 17 & 24
  • always – Gen 6: 3.
  • of old – Gen 6: 4.
  • of old time – Ecc 1: 10.
  • perpetual – Gen 9: 12; Ex 29: 9.
  • everlasting – Gen 9: 16; Gen 17: 7, 8, 13 & 19.
  • for evermore – 2 Sam 22: 51
  • for ever and ever – 1 Chron 29: 10
  • alway – Job 7: 16.
  • ancient – Pro 22: 28

`Owlam reveals that God is Everlasting:

  • the everlasting God – Gen 21: 33; Hab 1: 12; 
  • the Lord shall reign for ever and ever – Ex 15: 18.
  • God’s everlasting arms – Deut 33:  27.
  • the Lord sits King forever – Ps 29: 10
  • The counsel of the Lord stands for ever – Ps 33: 10
  • Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever – Ps 45: 6
  • God will establish it forever – Ps 48: 8
  • I will make thy name to be remembered in all generations: therefore shall the people praise thee for ever and ever –  Ps 45: 17
  • This God is our God for ever and ever – Ps 48: 14
  • He rules by His power forever – Ps 66: 7.
  • His name shall endure forever – Ps 72: 17
  • Blessed be His glorious name forever – Ps 72: 19.
  • Will you be angry forever? – Ps 85: 5.
  • His mercy endureth forever – Ps 136: 26
  • He keeps truth forever – PS 146: 6
  • in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength – Isa 26: 4
  • He is the Everlasting King  – Jer 10: 10.

 

`Owlam also reveals characteristics of the Eternal God

He is faithful, keeps His promises to His people for ever.
