1. Humans can inherit Eternal Life

After rereading the last week’s post titled  “The Righteous Will Inherit Eternal Life”,  I decided to explore the meaning of “inherit” in scripture.  Jesus taught us that a human being can inherit Eternal Life. Can you imagine being able to live forever?

And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life (Mt. 19: 29).

2. N0 0ne wants to die and every one wants to live forever

Jews were aware that they had that privilege as humans and often asked the Lord how they could inherit Eternal Life:

  • what  good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life – Matt 19: 16
  • what shall I do, that I may inherit eternal life – Mark  10: 17.
  • what shall I do to inherit eternal life? –   Lk 10: 25, Lk 18: 18.

Lord Jesus frequently taught the Jews how they could inherit or have Eternal Life:

  • But he shall receive an hundredfold … and in the world to come eternal life – Matt 10: 17; Luke 18: 30.
  • And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life (Mt. 19: 29).
  • That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life – John 3: 15 & 16.
  • Jesus spoke directly about inheriting eternal life in eight other texts.

The doctrine of  Eternal Life was so important that the Apostles preached it:

  • God has also granted the Gentiles repentance unto life – Acts 11: 18.
  • God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life – Acts 13: 46.
  • all those who were ordained to eternal life believed –  Acts 13: 48
  • Mentions of eternal life was made in 46 additional texts of the  New Testament scriptures.

3. What does it mean to inherit Eternal Life?

Klēronomeō  (G2816), is the Greek word for inherit.   It is used in the following ways:

  • inherit eternal/everlasting life
  • inherit the kingdom
  • inherit the kingdom of god
  • inherit incorruption
  • To be an heir of eternal life – The word heir is a synonym of the word inherit in the New Testament Scriptures.

4. The children of God are the Heirs  of Eternal Life

Klēronomeō  (G2816) comes from the root word klēronomos which is used in the scripture to mean HEIR.  In Jewish tradition, an heir was the firstborn son and was designated to receive all of the father’s estate, usually on his death.

Scriptures teach us that the Righteous are heirs of God:

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory – Romans 8: 16 & 17.

Noah…became the heir of the righteousness which is by faith – Hebrews 11: 7.

God has chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom which He promised to those who love Him – James 2: 5.

5. Important criteria for becoming children and heirs of God

We must be justified by His grace in order to become heirs of God (Titus 3:7).  More on justification next time. Until – peace, blessing and angelic protection.
