1. Prelude to understanding what it mean to ne tempted by Satan the serpent?

Before we examine the parallels between the temptation in the Garden of Eden and the Temptation of Lord Jesus, we need to understand the teaching about TEMPTATION.

The text of Hebrews 4: 5 teaches us that, like us,  Jesus was tempted 3985 3987 IN ALL POINTS, yet remained sinless:

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in 2596 all points 3956 tempted 3985 3987  like as [we are, yet] without sin (Hebrews 4: 15)

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin  (NIV)

2. The meaning of  tempted 3985 3987 in the language of the Holy Scriptures.

Peirazō/G 3985 (verb), is one of the Greek words used for tempted 3985 3987  Note that satan is called the tempter3985   The usage if the word tempted 3985 3987brought out a world of truth to me which I will begin to share today.

a. The tempter3985  interjects doubt regarding the truth of God’s Word

Satan tried to make Lord Jesus doubt His identity with the phrase, “IF  thou be the Son of God, command  that  these stones be made bread .”  However, Jesus knew early in life that He was the Son of God and the purpose for which He had come into the world. Moreover, the prophets had faithfully testified to that truth for centuries.

IF (ei/G 1487) is used as a conjunction in this context, and more specifically, as a SUBORDINATING CONJUNCTION. A subordinating conjunction is used when there are two clauses in a phrase and when the outcome depends on the condition set.

In other words, satan wanted Jesus to participate in a power play that would prove that He was the Son of God.  God did not need a power play with the tempter3985

Jesus was proved before time, before His birth and during His life to be the Son of God.  Note that satan was so desperate for Jesus to submit that he challenged the Lord about His sonship twice in the temptation. He continues to deny the Lordship and authority  of our Lord and Christ to this day.

b. The tempter3985 interjects new, untrue ideas into the Word of God/twists the scripture

The Pharisees, tempting3985 Jesus, asked Him if it was lawful for a man to divorce his wife for EVERY CAUSE. Jesus asked them if THEY HAD NOT READ WHAT THE SCRIPTURES SAID ON THE ISSUE of divorce. Lord Jesus went on to explain the TRUTH in the  law of Moses regarding divorce (Matthew 19: 3 – 9).

This is the pattern in the Garden of Eden and satan continues this today.

c. Temptation is a trap from the devil, but God will make a way for you to escape – 1 Corinthians 10: 13.

More to come on the meaning of temptation in the Holy Scriptures. Blessings, peace, angelic prosperity and protection.
