I began to write about the parallels between the temptation of Jesus and that of Adam and Eve in the post “Parallels – SatanParallels – Satan Tempted Jesus In All Points, Like Adam And Eve.” Scripture teaches us that Jesus was tempted “In all points/`ummah 5980” like humans. We discovered that that In all points/`ummah 5980 meant that Jesus’ temptation was PARALLEL WITH, CORRESPONDING TO, EXACTLY to that of humans.
Was Jesus’ temptation parallel to that of our Adam’s? To discover this, we need to examine the elements of Lord Jesus’ temptation in order to determine if there are any parallels. Today’s writings will show that both Adam and Jesus were tempted to satisy the desires of the flesh rather than obeying the Word of God.
2. The Parallels
JESUS – Was almost 30 years old when He was tempted (Luke 3: 23)
ADAM – was tempted before he was 130 years, which was the time of Seth’s birth (Genesis 5: 3).
JESUS – was tempted to satisfy a natural desire of the flesh rather than obeying the Word of the Father to fast. The Father had commanded our Lord Jesus to go to the wilderness and to fast from food for 40 days (Matt 4: 1).Satan tempted him during those days of fasting to eat by speaking to a stone and commanding it to become bread:
If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God (Luke 4: 3 & 4).
We learn from the cross reference that the Father was testing Jesus to see what was in His heart and to see if the Lord would obey the Word of the Father and no one else:
God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
He humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD (Deuteronomy 8: 2 & 3).
ADAM AND EVE succumbed to the temptation to obey the desires of the flesh and the word of satan rather than the Word of God:
And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die
And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die
For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.
And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat (Genesis 3: 2 – 6)
