1. The Kingdom of Heaven Is Like A Field In Which A Crop Of Wheat Was planted in A Field:

Jesus gave another parable in which He compared the Kingdom of Heaven to a field in which a farmer planted a crop of wheat in a field:

24 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man which sowed good seed in his field:

25 But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way.

26 But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.

27 So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares?

28 He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?

29 But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them.

30 Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn (Matthew 13: 24 – 30).


2. The Keys To The Parable of the Wheat (Matthew 13: 36 – 43):

After the crowd had dispersed, the disciples asked Jesus to interpret the Parable to them. This is His response:

a. The Farmer who sowed the good seed = the Son of man

b. The field = the world

c. The good seed = the children of the kingdom

d. The tares = the children of the wicked one

e. The enemy that sowed the tares = the devil

f. The harvest = the end of the world

g. The reapers = the angels

h. The fire = burning of the children of the wicked one in fire at the end of the world:

The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that offend, and them which do iniquity;

42 And shall cast them into a furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

43 Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear (Mathew 13: 36 – 43).


3. Further understanding of the Parable of the wheat and tares

a. Sequencing of the Parable of the Wheat

First, I noted that the Parable of the Wheat immediately followed the Parable of the Sower. Jesus intentionally followed this sequence, because in the Parable of the Sower, He laid the foundation for the understanding of the Parable of the wheat and tares.


b. Jesus defined the Seed in the Parable as the Children of the Kingdom

In the Parable of the Sower, Jesus defined the  seed as the Word of God. However, Jesus compared the Seed (sperma/G 4690) to people, or the Children of the Kingdom, in the Parable of the Wheat. This is because He expects the Children of the Kingdom to reproduce His Kingdom in the earth and to bless the nations with the Word of God and Power and Lifestyle of the Kingdom.

c. More understanding about the tares (zizanion/G2215).

The word tares is found only in this Parable. The represent the children of the devil who planted them in the field or the world. Jesus The Son of Man revealed in the Parable that He never intended the earth to be populated with tares. This is important, because humans sometimes blame God for wicked actions that are instigated by satan and his children. Let’s be fair to God.

Note the progression in the parable. First, the wheat sprang up and produced fruit, THEN the tares  sprang up.

Easton’s Bible Dictionary defines the tare as the bearded darnel  (Lolium temulentum), a species of rye grass whose seeds are poisonous. It closely resembles the wheat until the ear appears and that is the time that the difference is discovered. Bionet – Earfrinet  makes the following comparisons between the tare/bearded darnel and wheat:

  • The ears on the real wheat are so heavy that it makes the entire plant droop downward, but L. temulentum, whose ears are light, stands up straight.
  • Wheat ripens to a brown colour, whereas L. temulentum turns black.
  • When L. temulentum matures, the spikelets turn edge ways to the main stem of the plan whereas the wheat spikelets remain as they grew previously.


4. What did Jesus teach us in the Parable of the wheat?

1. Wheat or good seed is more productive than the tare.

2. The tare appears and behaves differently from the wheat. It is known by its fruit, just as the wheat is known by the fruit and power of the Kingdom of God.

3. When the tare ripens, it becomes black, a symbol of sin. The tares that infiltrate the church are not transformed, but adherents to the doctrines of devils.

43. Jesus advised the Angels to allow the tares to grow rather than pulling them up since good wheat can also be destroyed. Bionet – Earfrinet  confirms that prevention is the best approach in managing this weed since hand weeding and chemical control can be difficult when tares grow among wheat because of the very close resemblance.

As a result, God will permit the Kingdom of God will be permitted to have “fakes” in order to spare the true believers from accidental destruction. Only those who operate in the discernment of God will be able to see the tares for who they are. However, sometimes, ruthless exposure can cause more harm than good to the true believers who may become discouraged and turn away from the faith.

This is a very difficult thing to understand. Is Jesus saying that false prophets and believers must be allowed to grow in His Church at all costs. Not really. He warned us to beware of false prophets and apostles and gave us the signs by which they should be known.


5. How to deal with tares in the Kingdom?

a. Deal with the issues not personalities or individuals, using the true Word of God as the basis for correction

  1. Jesus led by example by continually exposing the false doctrines and false religious system of the Scribes and Pharisees although He did not call anyone by name.
  2. The Apostles, especially Paul, also continued to instruct us on how to deal with false teachers and brethren in the church. Apostle Paul and Barnabas resisted the false doctrines of the teachers who tried to force the Gentile believers to be circumcised (Galatians 1 & 2). The issue was eventually addressed and corrected by the general assembly of the church (Acts 15).

b. Be patient with the tares and try to get a confession out of them

Jesus knew that Judas was a thief and betrayer but allowed him to fully operate in the ministry. Judas continually conspired with the Scribes and Pharisees to kill the Lord. In so doing, he became a child of the devil.  Jesus knew all of this and  warned the disciples that one of them was “a devil.”

As we study the progression of Judas’ downfall, we see that  he permitted satan to enter into him in order to gain the courage to betray his Lord. Jesus permitted him to eat the Lord’s Supper then set up a scenario of betrayal in which Judas confessed to being the one. We can ask the Lord for a strategy to get the tares out of the assembly.


c. Leadership of the Body of Christ has a responsibility towards the flock

1. The Church must ask for and embrace the leadership gifts that Christ gave to His church so that the Body of Christ receives true doctrine and revelation from the scriptures that is “rightly divided.”

The ministry of the true Apostle is particularly needed today, because the Apostle receives understanding of the mysteries of the Word that are hidden from the eyes of the other leaders. The Father is weary of people who call themselves Apostles who are no Apostle at all and who lead the church into error and bondage rather than truth.

2. Secondly, all false doctrine must be rooted out of the church as set forth by the examples of the Apostles (e.g. Acts 15).

3. The church must operate in the ministry gift of the DISCERNMENT of  God in order to prevent infiltration of false ministers as in the example of  Jesus, Apostle Peter and Apostle Paul:

  • Apostle Paul warned us about  “false brethren”  whose intention is to bring the Church into bondage.
  • Apostle Peter, under the Ministry of Discernment, exposed the duplicity of Ananias and Saphira in Acts 5.
  • Apostle Peter also exposed the motives of Simon the false prophet who tried to buy the power of Christ (Acts 8: 17 – 24).

4. The church must teach the believers the signs of fasle apostles in order to protect the flock and the leaders must not fellowship with ministers and ministries that are in error.

5. Leadership must warn the body about people in the Assembly who withstand the truth. This was the example of Apostle Paul who warned the believers not to fellowship with Alexander the coppersmith (2 Timothy 4: 14 – 16).

6. Sometimes the Church may need to excommunicate the tare after unsuccessfully dealing with the sin, as in the example of Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 5.

I believe that Jesus is warning about the “witch hunt” type of approach in which people go around seeking out information on ministers in order to expose and embarrass them. He will wait until the end of the world to give due reward of eternal fire to those tares who attempt to infiltrate His Kingdom.
