1. Faith in the scriptures

The word Faith first appears in Deuteronomy 32: 20 and it is spoken in the text in which Moses recounted God’s dealings with the Jews. In spite of His dealings with the nation, they provoked the Father to jealousy when they forsook Him and  sacrificed to devils. God exposed their actions as a lack of faith in Him:

And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith (’emuwn/H 529) – Deuteronomy 32: 20.

‘ EMUWN  shows that faith is based in truth.  Therefore, faith in humans is based on the truthfulness of God in performing the Word that He speaks:

  • A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful H529 ambassador is health – Proverbs 13: 17.
  • faithful H529 witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies – Proverbs 14: 5.
  • Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful H529 man who can find? – Proverbs 20: 6.
  • Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth H529 may enter in – Isaiah 26: 2.

3. There is a God element and a Human element of faith.

‘ EMUWN comes from the root word ‘aman (H539) which is used to mean believe, believed, trust and put trust.   ‘Aman shows that there are two elements of faith – God and Man (Table 1).

God’s responsibility is to instruct humans with His Word, then to confirm His Word with signs or evidence.  Scriptures show that there is sometimes a time delay between the speaking of the Word of God and the fulfillment thereof.

However,  the human element is to believe God and to live in accordance with the Word spoken in order to please the Father. Faith or trust in the Word of God must remain constant and must not fail even when eons of time have passed.

Table 1    The God and human elements of faith according to the usage of ‘aman  in scripture

God makes promises of future eventsGod promised Abraham that the number of his descendants would be like the stars (Genesis 15: 5) Abraham believed God and God counted it to him for righteousness (Genesis 15: 6).And Abram believed the LORD, and the LORD counted him as righteous because of his faith (NLT).
God performs miracles to motivate people to believe His Promise

And Moses answered and said, But, behold, they will not believe me, nor hearken unto my voice: for they will say, The LORD hath not appeared unto thee

And the LORD said unto him, What is that in thine hand? And he said, A rod

And he said, Cast it on the ground. And he cast it on the ground, and it became a serpent; and Moses fled from before it

And the LORD said unto Moses, Put forth thine hand, and take it by the tail. And he put forth his hand, and caught it, and it became a rod in his hand

That they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath appeared unto thee (Exodus 4: 1 – 5)

And it shall come to pass, if they will not believe H539 thee, neither hearken to the voice of the first sign, that they will believe H539 the voice of the latter sign

And the people believed: H539 and when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel, and that he had looked upon their affliction, then they bowed their heads and worshipped (Exodus 4: 31).

And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed H539 the LORD, and his servant Moses (Exodus 14: 31).

And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe H539 me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? (Numbers 14: 11)

God is faithful to keeping His Word

… the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful H539 God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations (Deuteronomy 7: 9).

And I will raise me up a faithful H539 priest, that shall do according to that which is in mine heart and in my mind: and I will build him a sure H539 house; and he shall walk before mine anointed for ever (1 Samuel 2: 35).

… the testimony of the LORD is sure, H539 (Psalm 19: 7)

My mercy will I keep for him for evermore, and my covenant shall stand fast H539 with him (Psalm 89: 28)

Thy testimonies are very sure: H539 holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever (Psalm 93: 5)

The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure. H539

(Psalm 111: 7)

Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure H539 mercies of David (Isaiah 55: 3)

Then they said to Jeremiah, The LORD be a true and faithful H539 witness between us… (Jeremiah 42: 5)

Remind God of His Promise

And now, O God of Israel, let thy word, I pray thee, be verified, H539 which thouspakest unto thy servant David my father (1 Kings 8: 26).

Let it even be established, H539 that thy name may be magnified for ever, saying, The LORD of hosts is the God of Israel, even a God to Israel: and let the house of David thy servant be established before thee (1 Chronicles 17: 24).

Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: H539 for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude (2 Chronicles 1: 9)

Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe H539 in the LORD their God

(2 Kings 17: 14)

God gives instructions that seem impossible from a human standpoint

Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you (2 Chronicles 20: 17)

Do what God says

And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe H539 in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; H539 believe H539 his prophets, so shall ye prosper (2 Chronicles 20: 20)

Blessings, peace and angelic prosperity.
