1. What is a lunar eclipse?

It occurs when  the Moon passes through some portion of Earth’s shadow and can take place at Full Moon  (Nasa 2001).  In a total lunar eclipse, the full moon turns a coppery red as it passes into Earth’s shadow. During the process, the moon’s bright glow dims, taking on a red hue because of shimmers of sunlight and sunsets seeping through the Earth’s atmosphere (CNN 2014).

God put the moon in the sky to

“divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and  seasons. A lunar eclipse is a one time merging of sunlight and sunsets or days and nights”  (Genesis 1: 14).

Symbolically,  a lunar eclipse seems to indicate that there is no division between night and day, may be a reference to eternity.

2. Does the bible speak about lunar eclipses?

a. Prophet Joel and Apostle John prophesied that the moon would become as red as blood in the latter days:

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come (Joel 2: 31)

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth G1623 seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood (Revelation 6: 12).

3. When was the first lunar eclipse in history?

According to NASA, the first  Lunar Eclipses of Historical Interest was on  747 Feb 06 BCE, with the last occurring on January 9th 2001. The 2001 eclipse was the first in 84 years.

Prophet Joel, who first spoke about lunar eclipses, may have prophesied during the time of King Uzziah, who lived about 809 to 757 BC. For some reason, modern  people counted time backwards before the birth of Christ. Therefore, the understanding is that the first lunar eclipse would have taken place 10 years after King Uzziah’s death.

Prophet Joel timed the eclipses with the “last days” or latter or later days of the Jewish nation and of the earth.  The 747 eclipse marked the beginnings of the latter days of the earth.  We need to review key events in Jewish and earth history from that time in order to better understand the prophesies and times in which we live.

Scriptures show that momentous historical events are marked by lunar eclipses.

Apostle Joel pleaded with Israel to weep and lament because of the Day of the Lord:

Alas for the day! for the day of the LORD is at hand, and as a destruction from the Almighty shall it come (Joel 1: 15)

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come (Joel 2: 31)

The Day of the Lord appears, at face value, to refer to a specific time of destruction. This is revealed between the texts of Joel 1: 15 to Joel 2: 31, which are both odd numbers,  which  I hear as I write. Prophet Joel warned Israel about  coming judgment and destruction including:

  • famine
  • drought
  • bush fires
  • low water levels in rivers
  • changes in the weather systems
  • invasion of the land by a destructive northern “people great and strong.”  Commentators believe that Joel prophesied about the destruction by locusts, as in Egypt.

Joel advised the nation that they could be saved by taking action. They priests, the  ministers of the Lord, were to:

… weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?  (Joel 2: 17).

Interestingly, rather than confirming that Joel’s  prophecy had been fully completed, Apostle Peter said that the outpouring of the Holy Spirit was the fulfilment of Joel      before “that great and notable day of the Lord.”

Was Apostle Peter warning about the impending destruction in AD 70? On the Day of Pentecost, he paralleled the prophecy spoken by Prophet Joel in which the “last days” refers to a momentous day of destruction on a day to come in the future. Only those who called on the name of the Lord would be saved. History shows that those who remembered the Lord’s prophecy escaped from the destruction of Jerusalem:

And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams

The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of the Lord come

And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved  (Acts 2: 17, 20 & 21)

4.  Our brother Joel’s prophesy continues to be all time – Plagues of locusts still occur in Israel’s history & God is still pouring out His Spirit on nations.  We are living in the latter days of the earth

Curious as always, I searched online for “plagues of locusts in Israel’s history.”   The first headline read  Insect invasion: Israel battles plague of locusts  (Monday May 13th, 2013). This was amazing to me and indicates that the nation is not in the place where they should be. Apostle Moses had promised that none of the plagues of Egypt would come on the land if the people would obey God.

Israel also experienced locust plagues in 1915, 2013. I cannot at this time find the time of the first locust invasion. By the way, God permitted the Jews to eat locusts, so can a plague can be turned around into  locust harvesting?   Here are accounts of the 2013 invasion, which occurred three weeks before the Passover:

The ground was covered with what looked like a slow-moving green carpet. Millions of locusts, all moving in the same direction, made a loud rustling sound as they devoured everything in their path (World News 2013).

For many Israelis, the biblical comparisons were irresistible: locusts were swarming across the border from Egypt three weeks before Passover, like a vivid enactment of the eighth plague visited upon the obdurate  Pharaoh (Huffington Post).

5. Apostle John and lunar eclipses

Apostle John spoke in Revelation 6 about such terrible events on earth that humans referred to it as the “great day of His wrath” (Revelation 6: 17).  The lunar eclipse was associated with the opening of the 6th seal in heaven:

And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood – Revelation 6: 12

27th March 2015: Apostle John saw lunar and solar eclipses occuring together. NASA

The lunar eclipse of Revelation 6 was accompanied by:

  • a great earthquake
  • the sun becoming blackened
  • untimely fall of the stars, symbolic of the Jewish nation (possibly the AD 70 destruction)
  • changes in the sky and shifting of land masses or plates of the earth which would result in earthquakes and tsunamis.
  • fear and terror of God

Should we be on the alert for any such events following this eclipse?

6. Future lunar eclipses

2014 marks 2761 years of lunar eclipses in the earth.  The 2014/2015 eclipses  are  five to six months apart and symbolize the sixth seal:

    • April 15th 2014 – Jewish Passover month. On Moses’ calendar this would be the day of the escape from Egypt or the Sunday after the Passover.

October  8 2014 – 7th Jewish  month (Day of Atonement on Day 10; Feast of Tabernacles)

    • April 4 2015 – 1st  Jewish  month.

    • Sept 28 2015 – 6th Jewish month (Announcement of Jesus’ birth)

The April 14 2014 eclipse occurred on 1st Jewish month or Abib. If Moses’ calendar is followed,  April 14 would exactly be the Passover and day after the Crucifixion of Lord Jesus.  April or Abib also marks the original Jewish New Year ,  Resurrection of our Lord on the 15th Abib and Feast of Unleavened Bread.

A notable eclipse also occurred on  Apr 03rd in the 33rd Year AD. This is the month and year of Jesus’s crucifixion. It lasted for 2 hours and 50 minutes.

Scientist Dr. Jason Lile explained that lunar eclipses regularly coincide with Jewish holidays, since the Jewish calendar is based on the lunar cycle.  Eclipses that occur SIX MONTHS APART are referred to as tetrads  (Christian News 2014)  and several of these tetrads have occurred in history (NASA).

These tetrads seem to speak to the sixth seal of Revelation in relation to their spacing. Earth’s history may provide answers:

  • July 1, 828
  • December 25th, 828
  • July 31st, 1776
  • January  23rd, 1777
  • July 20th, 1777
  • December 4th, 1778

Scientific evidence shows that lunar and solar eclipses alternate.

Blessings, peace and angelic prosperity.
