1. A discussion with my brother Lyndon Moss sparked this post about Jesus’ family tree or generations
My brother Lyndon Moss challenged me on Sunday December 18th to see if I could explain the meaning of the generations of Jesus Christ as documented in Matthew 1: 1 – 17. Our discussion centered around the duration of a generation in the text. I had tried to interpret this text before and could not fathom it.
I am writing this post at Jesus’ request. The last revelation in the post is that Jesus rules EVEN NOW on His Throne in Jerusalem. Who will dare to take it away from Him? He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.
I prayed for help and my eyes were opened to the answer, which I sent via email to him on Wednesday December 21st 2014:
Hello Lyndon
How are you? I got the revelation this morning – can’t believe it was so easy.
A Generation in this context referred to family heads and not to the life span. There are 14 family heads/chiefs etc in each category listed in the text of Matthew 1.
a. Abraham to David = 1250 years
- Abraham born – 1948
- David born – 3198
b. David to carrying away into Babylon = 500 years
- David born – 3198
- First carrying away = 3698
c. From the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations = 590 years
- Carrying away – First carrying away = 3698
- Christ = 4288
2. Apostle Matthew’s record of Jesus’ ancestry – Matthew 1
I will now outline Jesus’ family tree as recorded by Apostle Matthew which he called the book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Abraham to David = 14 generations
- Abraham begat Isaac
- Isaac begat Jacob
- Jacob begat Judas and his brethren
- Judas begat Phares and Zara of Thamar
- Phares begat Esrom
- Esrom begat Aram
- Aram begat Aminadab
- Aminadab begat Naasson
- Naasson begat Salmon
- Salmon begat Booz of Rachab
- Booz begat Obed of Ruth
- Obed begat Jesse
- Jesse begat David the king
- David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias
David to the carrying away into Babylon = 14 generations
- David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias
- Solomon begat Roboam
- Roboam begat Abia
- Abia begat Asa
- Asa begat Josaphat
- Josaphat begat Joram
- Joram begat Ozias
- Ozias begat Joatham
- Joatham begat Achaz
- Achaz begat Ezekias
- Ezekias begat Manasses
- Manasses begat Amon
- Amon begat Josias
- Josias begat Jechonias and his brethren, about the time they were carried away to Babylon
From the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.
And after they were brought to Babylon:
- Jechonias begat Salathiel
- Salathiel begat Zorobabel
- Zorobabel begat Abiud
- Abiud begat Eliakim
- Eliakim begat Azor
- Azor begat Sadoc
- Sadoc begat Achim
- Achim begat Eliud
- Eliud begat Eleazar
- Eleazar begat Matthan
- Matthan begat Jacob
- Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary
- Joseph was the husband of Mary who gave birth to Jesus, who is called Christ.
- Christ (NB: begat us).
- So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations – Matthew 1: 17.
Other tidbits related to Jesus’ family tree
Jesus’ surrogate father Joseph was in line to be King of Israel
God had promised King David that his descendants will always sit on the throne:
Now therefore, O LORD God of Israel, keep with thy servant David my father that which thou hast promised him, saying, There shall not fail thee a man in my sight to sit upon the throne of Israel; yet so that thy children take heed to their way to walk in my law, as thou hast walked before me – 2 Chronicles 6: 16.
Since the men in Jesus’ family line up to the time of the second captivity were Kings, we can deduce that Joseph and his surrogate son Christ were in line to be King. This could explain why the Jews really believed that Jesus had come to reinstate the Kingdom to Israel and even tried to forcibly make Him King – Isaiah 9: 6 & 7.
It is the Eternal Will and Plan of God that a Jew, a descendant of David rule in Jerusalem. This promise was given to King David and reinforced in the scriptures:
Then will I stablish the throne of thy kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David thy father, saying, There shall not fail thee a man to be ruler in Israel – 2 Chronicles 7: 18.
The LORD hath sworn in truth unto David; he will not turn from it; Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne – Psalm 132: 11.For thus saith the LORD; David shall never want a man to sit upon the throne of the house of Israel – Jeremiah 33: 17.
He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David
And in mercy shall the throne be established: and he shall sit upon it in truth in the tabernacle of David, judging, and seeking judgment, and hasting righteousnessWe have heard of the pride of Moab; he is very proud: even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his wrath: but his lies shall not be soTherefore shall Moab howl for Moab, every one shall howl: for the foundations of Kirhareseth shall ye mourn; surely they are stricken – Isaiah 16: 5 – 7.For thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, as in the day of MidianFor every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fireFor unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of PeaceOf the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this – Isaiah 9: 4 – 7.
And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make warHis eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of GodAnd the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and cleanAnd out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God –And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS – Revelation 19: 11 – 16.

I am wondering if you can help me pls. I have a concerning question; “Meeting Jesus up in the clouds” … doesn’t that mean, dying? I believe in the 2nd coming of Jesus and seeking truth for self in the process. I don’t know if your familiar with the movie, “Left Behind” part 1 but it shows “clothing” left…. isn’t that symbolic? We leave our bodies behind, but Jesus takes our souls? I appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.

Hello Chandra
This question requires an indepth response. However, I believe the Word of God by faith:
a. Old Testament translations or rapture –
– Enoch and Elijah went to heaven with their bodies and spirit.
– Elijah left only his mantle behind, so everything else went with him.
– Flesh and blood cannot live in heaven, so once they got there, they were transformed into the spiritual body.
b. The resurrection of Christ
– he arose with a new, spiritual body that we will inherit in heaven
– Mary Magdalene could not touch it until He had returned from the Father
– Lord Jesus was able to change His appearance so that He became unrecognizable to Mary Magdalene and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus
– He was able to go through walls and enter rooms without using the door – LOL
– Finally, He was able to ascend and descend into Heaven with that body. He ascended to the Father after His resurrection and 40 days later.
– Did He ascend in a naked state? I think not. LOL
I have written extensively on this issue, and refer you to these links. Angelic blessings and prosperity in 2014. I do not believe that I may have fully answered your question as yet, but these are the foundation teachings.

First of all I would like to give you the hebrew definition of the word “Generation” as it is used in Matthew 1:1:
1074 // genea // genea // ghen-eh-ah’ //
from (a presumed derivative of) 1085 ; TDNT – 1:662,114; n f
AV – generation 37, time 2, age 2, nation 1; 42
1) fathered, birth, nativity
2) that which has been begotten, men of the same stock, a family
2a) the several ranks of natural descent, the successive
members of a genealogy
Now, I would like to inform you that in Matthew chapter one, this is the bloodline of Joseph, and not that of Jesus Christ.
Jesus’ bloodline is in Luke chapter three. Notice Luke 3:23:
And Jesus himself began to be about thirty years of age, being (as was supposed ) the son of Joseph, which was the son of Heli.
Being as was supposed indicates that Joseph was not in the bloodline of Jesus Christ, but was the son-in-law of Heli, who was the father of Mary.
You see, that word supposed in Luke 3:23 has the following hebrew definition:
3551 // nomov // nomos // nom’-os //
from a primary nemo (to parcel out, especially food or grazing to
animals); TDNT – 4:1022,646; n m
AV – law 197; 197
1) anything established, anything received by usage, a custom, a law,
a command
1a) of any law whatsoever
So the true meaning is that, in Luke 3: Joseph was mentioned in the bloodline of Jesus Christ as his step father, and as the son-in-law of Heli, Mary’s father. Also notice that Jesus came through Nathan, King David’s son, and not through his son Solomon. Also notice that in Luke 3, Jesus’ bloodline can be trace all the way back to Adam; This is the complete, and true bloodline of Jesus Christ. I could go deeper into the true date of his birth, which would reveal how he became a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek, and King of Kings, and Lord of Lords, but I will defer at this point.

Hello Branson
I hear you. I had planned to make a comparison between Luke and Matthew’s writings, but have been busy. I do agree that Jesus is not Joseph’s natural son and that He is the son of God. I particularly love the way in which Luke traced the family tree back to God and this is one of my favorite texts about the genealogy of earth.
I draw to your attention that the Apostles wrote from different perspectives. Older people in my country used to trace family trees orally and tell us who was related to who, sometimes ending with a complex pattern of relationships that made our heads spin to this day. The beauty is that you discovered relatives that you should not marry due to the family connections. LOL.
The situation is the same here. The Apostles documented the lineage of the Lord from different perspectives, referring people that were not mentioned by the other. It is apparent that they did not compare note, as they wrote by the Holy Ghost. For example:
a. Grandfathers were sometimes referred to as fathers in scriptures. This could have happened.
b. The Apostles mentioned different/other people in the blood line who were earthly relatives of Christ even though they did not match exactly.
c. In keeping with their varied interests, Matthew spoke about the women in the blood line, sometimes of questionable character, while Luke did not. This is God’s way of saying that He loves the world and came to save us all, not just the Jews.
d. Luke mentioned some people in King David’s blood line that Matthew did not speak about. They existed and this information may help the Jews to trace their history.
God bless and thanks for your feedback as it reminded me that I am yet to do this comparison. Angelic blessings and prosperity in the New Year
Sincerely
Mercedes
