Back to the Last Days

In a previous post on April 11th 2015, I asked the question, “What End Time Event Did Jesus Prophesy About In Matthew 24?”  The scriptures show that Jesus had prophesied the AD 70 destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.  The record of Jewish historian Flavius Josephus describes the events in great detail and are worth a read as they give great insight into the events of the era.

As I carefully studied the Matthew 24 text, the Father showed me that Jesus prophesied about the timing of the destruction of the Temple. The prophecy is coded, however. I know that many of you will say that I am incorrect, but Jesus clearly told the disciples that the prophecy would be fulfilled in THIS GENERATION (Matthew 24: 34):

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?

And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.

For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many…

11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many…

23 Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not.

24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect

29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:

30 And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.

31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

32 Now learn a parable of the fig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors.

3Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled.

The key to understanding the text is to remember that Jesus told the disciples that all these things would be fulfilled in THIS GENERATION. Therefore, we will study the

  • appearance of false Christs and false Prophets
  • tribulation of those days
  • darkening of the sun and moon, falling of the stars and shaking of the powers of heaven
  • sign of the Son of Man in Heaven
  • sounding of the Angels and gathering together of the Elect
  • parable of the fig tree

False Christs and False Prophets in the era preceding the destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem

Flavius Josephus confirmed that false prophets appeared in the era. Theudas was a magician who masqueraded as a prophet (Josephus, nd). He appeared during the reign of Claudius Caesar, the Roman emperor between 41–54 CE (, 2015). Reading between the lines, Theudas would have been able to persuade the people to follow him by using demonic signs and wonders:

While Fadus was procurator of Judea … a certain magician, whose name was Theudaspersuaded a great part of the people to take their effects with them, and follow him to the river Jordan; for he told them he was a prophet, and that he would, by his own command, divide the river, and afford them an easy passage over it; and many were deluded by his words.

However, Fadus did not permit them to make any advantage of his wild attempt, but sent a troop of horsemen out against them; who, falling upon them unexpectedly, slew many of them, and took many of them alive. They also took Theudas alive, and cut off his head, and carried it to Jerusalem (Josephus, Antiquities: Book XX, Chapter 5).

36 For before these days rose up Theudas, boasting himself to be somebody; to whom a number of men, about four hundred, joined themselves: who was slain; and all, as many as obeyed him, were scattered, and brought to nought (Acts 5)

Other false prophets arose…

… These works, that were done by the robbers, filled the city with all sorts of impiety. And now these impostors and deceivers persuaded the multitude to follow them into the wilderness, and pretended that they would exhibit manifest wonders and signs, that should be performed by the providence of God. And many that were prevailed on by them suffered the punishments of their folly; for Felix brought them back, and then punished them.

Moreover, there came out of Egypt about this time to Jerusalem one that said he was a prophet, and advised the multitude of the common people to go along with him to the Mount of Olives, as it was called, which lay over against the city, and at the distance of five furlongs. He said further, that he would show them from hence how, at his command, the walls of Jerusalem would fall down; and he promised them that he would procure them an entrance into the city through those walls, when they were fallen down (Josephus, Antiquities of the Jews, Book XX – Chapter 8).

The Tribulation of those days

In the Wars of the Jews, Book 5, Josephus described the intolerable and cruel evils imposed on the Jewish populace initially by their own countrymen then later by the Romans:

Concerning the seditions at Jerusalem and what terrible miseries afflicted the city by their means – Chapter 1.

How a great many of the people earnestly endeavored to desert to the Romans; as also what intolerable things those that staid behind suffered by famine, and the sad consequences thereof”  – Chapter 10.

Titus thought fit to encompass the city round with a wall; after which the famine consumed the people by whole houses and families together – Chapter 12.

and more in the sad record…

Darkening of the sun and moon, falling of the stars and shaking of the powers of heaven

Keeping in mind that the Temple was destroyed in 70 CE, we see that there was a tetrad of  solar and lunar eclipses between April 69 CE and September 70 CE. These were dual warnings of the impending disaster:

10th  April 69 25th April 69
4th  October 69 18th October 69
30th  March 70 14th April 70
23rd September 70 9th September 70

To be continued. More to come. Angelic blessings, peace and prosperity.
