1. Apostle Moses directly linked the glory of the Lord with the miraculous
Yesterday we saw from New Testament that the glory of the Lord Jesus is eternal, powerful, miraculous, rich, majestic and brilliant, shining Light. We too are changed into the glorious image of the Lord as we gaze into His face, like Moses did in the Mount Sinai. Today, I will explore the Old Testament scriptures to see how the glory of the Lord is revealed. Apostle Moses was the first person to directly link to the glory of the Lord with the miraculous. When the Jews became hungry in the wilderness and murmured against the Lord, the Lord told Moses that He would “rain bread from heaven”. Bread coming from the sky? Wow!!! Wait a minute, though. The Lord revealed His glory in response to the peoples’ murmurings and not their intercessions – let’s not push Him:
And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, [and] when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.
Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no … (Ex 16: 3,4)
And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory (H3519/kabowd) of the LORD; for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD: and what [are] we, that ye murmur against us?
And Moses said, [This shall be], when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what [are] we? your murmurings [are] not against us, but against the LORD.
And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD: for he hath heard your murmurings.
And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory (H3519/kabowd) of the LORD appeared in the cloud (Ex 16: 7-10)
2. The glorious Lord appeared in the cloud
Yesterday we learnt from the New Testament that the Lord Himself is glorious. Exodus points us to the truth that the cloud is not the glory. The glory is the presence of the Lord hidden in the cloud and the miraculous power of God which is then revealed. God is superlatively able to do what seems impossible to man:
And in the morning, then ye shall SEE the glory (H3519/kabowd) of the LORD; for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD: … behold, the glory (H3519/kabowd) of the LORD appeared in the cloud, and the Lord spake unto Moses…”
Moses told the people that they would see the glory of the Lord. In fact, he told them to “come near before the Lord”. The glorious Lord then appeared in the cloud and He spoke to Moses. He had cloaked Himself with the cloud, hiding from the people. Was anyone apart from Moses able to hear His voice? Moses had face to face contact, but the people, while able to see the cloud, did not know the Lord in the cloud.
The glory of the Lord was also the promise that His miraculous power would be revealed in the provision of bread to feed the people. The glory of the Lord was the revelation of His power to do the seemingly impossible in a most barren place. He sent angels’ food (Ps 78: 25) from heaven for provision in the wilderness. Furthermore, the Israelites could only gather a particular volume daily and the volume they were allowed to harvest was doubled the day before their sabbath.
The most amazing thing to me, however, is that most of these people saw the glory of the Lord even in Egypt, yet perished in the wilderness because of unbelief
