I’ve been speaking about some of the mysteries of the faith that were taught by the apostles. Spiritual warfare is another important mystery and I will speak about it from another perspective.
The question is, “How do we rebuke the devil and his angels?” Here are some keys:
1. BIND THEM
Jesus taught us that “whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.” (Mt 16: 19).
Can this be done? Yes, binding fastens something in chains, according to the Greek translation. It cripples the activity of demons even as they crippled the woman who was bound for 18 years (Lk 13: 16). Here is what Rev 20: 1-3 teaches for our example:
Rev 20: 1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
Rev 20:2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
Rev 20:3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
2. CAST THEM OUT
Jesus did so in His ministry on earth. Demons would cry out in fear at His appearance, saying that He would torment them. Here is the account of Luke 8:
Luk 8:27 And when he went forth to land, there met him out of the city a certain man, which had devils long time, and ware no clothes, neither abode in any house, but in the tombs.
Luk 8:28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out, and fell down before him, and with a loud voice said, What have I to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God most high? I beseech thee, torment me not.
Luk 8:29 (For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For oftentimes it had caught him: and he was kept bound with chains and in fetters; and he brake the bands, and was driven of the devil into the wilderness.)
Luk 8:30 And Jesus asked him, saying, What is thy name? And he said, Legion: because many devils were entered into him.
Luk 8:31 And they besought him that he would not command them to go out into the deep
The deep is not the sea, but ä’-büs-sos – the bottomless pit or the abode of demons, also described in Rev 20: 3. When casting a devil out, don’t let it wander up and down to enter into other people, but bind it in chains and cast it back to the bottomless pit. Jude says that they are “reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day” (Jude 1: 6).
3. PULL DOWN THEIR STRONGHOLDS
Demons inhabit strongholds or places from which they launch attacks. Paul taught the believers that they must use spiritual weapons to pull down demonic strongholds. These include:
* the blood of the lamb and the word of His testimony (Rev 12: 11). The word of Jesus’ testimony is the prophetic word. When we plead the blood and use the prophetic word – the scriptures or any personal prophecy, we oppose and stop demonic activity (1 Tim 1: 18; Rev 19: 10)
* Praise and worship as in Paul and Silas’ testimony in Acts 16 and David’s in Psalm 149 in which he said that our high praises will bind kings and execute judgement on the heathen.
* Jesus made an open show of the devil in His death (Col 2: 15). Remind the devil about Jesus’ victory at Calvary. That embarrasses him. This is the strategy that lawyers use when they cite previous cases in which judgement was made on legal matters.
4. REBUKE THEM IN THE NAME OF THE LORD
When a rebuke is uttered in the name of the Lord, it ceases the activity of the thing or person being rebuked. For example, the winds and waves ceased when Jesus rebuked them and satan had to release Moses’ body to Prince Michael. This is confirmed in the scriptures:
Isa 45:23 I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear.
Rom 14:11 For it is written, As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God.

1. Introduction
I’m writing a long response to one reader who wrote a response to the post titled “keys for rebuking the devil and his demons”. This is what my reader said:
- ” the Bible does not give Christians the authority to rebuke the Devil, but to resist him.”
- “even Michael, one of the most powerful of the angels, did not dare to accuse Satan, but rather said, “The Lord rebuke you” (Jude 1:9).
- “It is not necessary for a Christian to rebuke Satan because God has given us His full armor to stand against evil”
https://pppministries.wordpress.com/2007/12/17/keys-for-rebuk…and-his-angels/
2. My response:
a. On the armor – This is the picture of a soldier dressed for active duty in the times in which Apostle Paul wrote. The soldier in Ephesians 6: 10-18 is wrestling against the forces of darkness. The armor is for defense and counterattack. Let me use the ‘sword of the Spirit” or the word of God as an example (Eph 6: 17). Using the example in Zechariah 3: 2, we see that the Lord rebuked satan with the sword or prophetic word regarding the Jews as His chosen people and their deliverance from the 70 year captivity. God was not going to change His promise in the face of the devil’s accusations about the sinfulness of the people of Israel:
And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke (reprove/Strongs H1605/ ga`ar) thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke (reprove/Strongs H1605/ ga`ar) thee: [is] not this a brand plucked out of the fire?
b. Jesus also used the sword in the temptation in the wilderness. In effect, He responded to the devil by speaking the word that was written. The devil fled from Him. Jesus, who is the Captain of our Salvation, was showing us how to escape from temptation by using the Word. Can you imaging what would have happened if Adam and Eve had rebuked the devil in the Garden of Eden?
Jesus delegated to the disciples the same authority that He held over the kingdom of darkness, assuring them that satan was already a defeated foe. He used strong words like, “tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy” (Lk 10: 17-20). He also said that He gave us the “keys of the kingdom” so that anything that we bind and loose on earth is bound and loosed in heaven (Mt 19:18).
As a risen believer with Christ, I am seated in a position of authority at His right hand and since all power is under His feet, they are also under my dominion. Hallelujah. I will continue to use the word of God, issued through my mouth to rebuke the devil.
Did you read how the prophet waged war? He said:
Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds.
[Let] the high [praises] of God [be] in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;
To execute vengeance upon the heathen, [and] punishments upon the people;
To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron;
To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD (Ps 149: 5-9).
c. Chief Prince Michael also used the power of the Word of God to rebuke the devil. He said what was said by the God family in heaven. This is what we are to do as well. Here is the text of Jude 1: 9:
“Yet Michael the archangel (Strong’s G743/archaggelos/chief of the angels), when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee”
Revelation 1: 7-9 tells us that it was Michael and His angels who cast the devil and his angels out of heaven. He did it with such speed and force that satan fell out of heaven like lightning, a fact which amused Jesus very much (Lk 10:18). I would therefore refrain from saying that the word durst implies another meaning in this context rather than fear of the devil.
What does the word durst mean in the context in which it is written? It is Strong’s G5111 or tolmaō. Scriptural usages show two main usages:
- dared not ask or do something – e.g. the Jews were shown up by Jesus and did not want their ignorance exposed again (Mt 22: 46; Mk 12: 34; Lk 20: 40)
- boldness – e.g. Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for Jesus’ body (Mt 15: 43)
http://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G5111&t=KJV (usage of the word durst)
Since these two usages do not hold true of Archangel Michael in relation to the devil, we need to examine the context of Jude to extrapolate the essence of this verse, since it cannot be understood in isolation. Since I’ve written on this text previously (see the links below), I would briefly say here that the book is about the fierce contention between the kingdoms of Light and darkness. The kingdom of darkness is very corrupt and its ruler rails against God’s authority. Chief Prince Michael does not need to descend to the level of railing against the devil, a subject, since it is already written that every knee will bow and every tongue will swear to the Lord’s authority (Isa 45: 23).
Given the context, I think that this rendition is best suited for this text:
But Mikha’el, the chief angel, when contending with the devil and arguing about the body of Moshe, dared not bring against him an abusive condemnation, but said, “May the Lord rebuke you!” (HNV)
I’ve written previously about Chief Prince Michael in Jude and would like you to follow these links:

d. The Apostles’ examples
To rebuke is to “to express sharp, stern disapproval of; reprove; reprimand” (dictionary.com). The apostles rebuke satan:
- Peter rebuked Simon Bar-Jesus for trying to buy the power of God (Acts 8)
- Apostle Paul rebuked Elymas the sorcerer for withstanding the faith and blinded him. This is an example of the warfare against the kingdom of darkness (Acts 13)
- Apostle Paul rebuked the fortune-telling demon (Acts 16)
These are just a few examples. The preaching of the gospel is a rebuke to the darkness (Eph 3: 8-10). Our lives of purity symbolized by the armor rebuke unbelievers. I am wrestling against a violent, roaring lion. What did Apostle James mean when he told us to “resist the devil and he will flee”? He meant that we were to oppose and withstand him. Since the Lord Jesus and Archangel Michael used a verbal rebuke very effectively, I will do the same to get rid of that enemy.

1. New technique for building Doctrine – Match Truth with Related Truth
In the previous post we studied the technique for Building a House of Truth. Today, Gabriel wants me to write about Matching Truth with Related Truth. This is the Technique or principle for Interrelating truth.
Matching Truth with Related Truth is really Concept Mapping (or at least a continuation).
This is so because there is no height, depth, width or end to God’s infinite truth:
O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable [are] his judgments, and his ways past finding out! (Romans 11: 33).
With the help of God, I will attempt to match Truth that is related to the Ministry of the Apostle.
2. Related Truth – the Apostle and Dominion
Rulership or dominion in the natural and spiritual realm is one of the elements of the role of the Apostle. While every believer has dominion in the natural and spiritual realm, the Apostle is highly advanced in exercising this God – given privilege.
The Precept of Dominion concept can either be taught as an element of the Apostle’s ministry, or taught separately:
